I'll be moving up to Fort Collins for school in a few days, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience trying to monitor sites closer to Denver. How close to Denver can I hear? Can I hear any metro area sites from up there if I get a good antenna? For reference I'll be living right off the CSU campus.

Don't think so. I live about a mile south of campus and have never been able to reliably receive Denver stuff.

If you still have ties down south, perhaps do an stream online.

Good to know, thanks. So in the city of Fort Collins, the primary law enforcement agency is FCPD and the primary fire department is Poudre valley fire department, right?

Yes FCPD, fire is Poudre Fire Authority, EMS is provided by Poudre Valley Health. Also CSU PD probably of interest to you, patrolling around campus and the satellite campus extensions around town.

Monitoring

I monitor 800 MHz Denver Metro from SW Fort Collins using a 4 element yagi on a 15 ft pole to receive Lookout Mt and several other high elevation sites. It is possible.

All of the Larimer County listings are available on RR and are up to date.
Almost all activity up here is on the 800 MHz DTRS system.

Cheers,

I am probably going to try a Yagi, because if I could hit Lookout that would be awesome. I failed to mention that my apartment is on the 3rd story of a building just off campus, so I'm hoping this will suffice in terms of height. No harm in trying.

I think it matters what is meant by "Denver."

I can receive DTRS Thorodin and sometimes Squaw Mtn from SE Ft. Collins using just the rubber duck properly positioned. CSP troopers refer to "Denver" --- their dispatch center.

But Denver's EDACs system is a different kettle of fish and would require much better antenna and maybe a receive amp.

Personally I find that I'd rather listen to the jurisdiction I'm in than one way far away. But maybe you know someone on the force......

I'd be most interested in hearing ACSO dispatch and South Metro Fire dispatch if possible, since that's the area around my house in Centennial. According to the wiki, it looks like Squaw might carry Arapahoe traffic (Lookout of course too!)... So since it sounds like it's "possible", I guess I just need to try for myself. And of course since I'll be up there I plan to listen mostly to Fort Collins.

Both are available on-line also if needed, even thru your smart phone.

Yes this is a good option, but I feel that ACSO, ACSO data(?), ACSO CH-5, Englewood PD, Littleton PD, and Greenwood Village PD, is too much for one feed and that I miss parts of convos that way!

Everyone has a different way they like to listen, and mine is usually picking a couple law agencies and a couple FDs. Maybe I'm weird! :)

I feel the same way - it's hard for me to listen if it's too busy so I usually listen to only one agency at a time when I have my scanner on.

My local police dept, imo, talks way to much, so I generally listen to State Patrol over Nebraska SRS, its more interesting and local fire dept stays busy, too. To me that is just enough activity to keep it interesting, not tiresome when trying to monitor several different agencies at once.
