AURORA - Two people were rushed to a local hospital and police began investigating after gunfire erupted at an apartment complex on Sunday afternoon.

Aurora Police Det. Bob Friel says they received several reports of multiple shots fired in the Ridge Hill Apartments, located on the 14100 block of E. Kentucky Pl. near South Moline Street, around 3 p.m.

When police arrived, Friel says two people were found injured and appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.

A witness told 9NEWS they heard sustained shooting and saw four men run from the apartment complex.

Police say the incident began as a fight inside an apartment. The suspect left, but authorities say he came back with additional people, broke into the apartment and started shooting. That's when the men ran away.

Friel says the two injured people were taken to a local hospital, but their names were not immediately known. Police say they both have life-threatening injuries.

A team of detectives and a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) unit was sent to the scene.

9NEWS and 9NEWS.com will update this story as more information becomes available.
