It sounds like to me that the transport units has access to the OHP
system. Just like the system I was familiar with in Louisiana with the Sheriff's Office. Our Prisoner Transport units were assigned with talk
groups for all the State Police Troops. If the deputy ever needed to
contact a troop all that deputy had to do was switch over to the State
System and scroll the radio over to the troop they needed to contact
and begin communicating with them. That's if the troop is monitoring.

Uh, red8, no offense but what you are describing in Louisiana is in no way similar to how the Oklahoma DPS smartzone TRS is setup. if you look in the database, Tulsa Co Sheriffs Office (TRD) has several talkgroups on the Tulsa site. There are 11 sites around the state linked by T1 (with more to come!) and when a unit's radio allocates to another site (kind of like when a cell phone roams towers) scanner listeners can then monitor talk groups that would not normally be on that specific site.

Freqscout, now that I think about it, I recall hearing TPD units on the Preston site. If they can allocate onto it, why not OKC or any of the others?

Phil .....Thank's for clearing that up about the OCSO south repeater . Not alot of people know how far that repeater can be heard . It's been keyed from Vinita to OKC it's even been used in Kansas a few times . I do know the north repeater is on a hill just outside of pawhuska near the new jail .

I do not know this information first hand about TPD not being able to roam. Someone else posted it.

You are correct that only Tcso TRDA can be used on the ohp side. I agree that any talk group could be programmed into the state network I talked recently to a tech about it. They said that TCSO had to get specific permission to get state wide coverage as there was fear from ohp and other state useres that if too many agencies got onto it there might be a system overload (or they say). He said the brass at Tpd said that there was no real need for them to do that as they do not often work out of the area and have the capabilities of the NE-RMA and to patch to the state agencies if necessary. TCSO because of their time spent transporting prisoners/mentals, and the fact that they do perate regulary in other jurisdictions were grnted permission.

Yes I do know the differenc between talk groups and frequencies. Each of these new repeaters have new frequencies though the monitor the same talk groups. Every time they add new repeaters I add new freqs.

Note....We were up in the Vinita area last week and the Tcso radio failed about Big Cabin
even though we were on the state zone. They must not have the Pryor/Miami repeaters on line yet or they may need to get the radios reprogrammed for those towers.

First of all the City of Tulsa / State of Oklahoma radio system should not be considered the “OHP” system. OHP is one of many agencies that utilize this statewide system. As I have said before any radio that is programmed to work on the City of Tulsa / State of Oklahoma system can operate anywhere there is an 800 City of Tulsa / State of Oklahoma tower. When municipal agencies are setup on the system they are programmed to operate off the tower or towers that are closest to their specific city. For example Sapulpa PD would work off the Tulsa or Bristow towers. This is also the case for specific channels on the OHP system. For example, when you are in Tulsa you will not here OHP Troop A Metro unless one of their units is affiliating in the Tulsa area. When it comes to County Agencies they are usually programmed to have their main dispatch channel work anywhere on the state system but the other channels work in their local county area. This prevents overload on other City of Tulsa / State of Oklahoma Towers that only have a few frequencies to utilize.

However, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, someone on here said they heard some TPD channels on other towers outside of the City of Tulsa. This could happen with the click of a mouse by the main City of Tulsa dispatch or DPS communications Center reprogramming a radio over the air. These dispatchers can send a message to any specific radio and tell it to talk to any tower on the system or not to talk to anything. A good example is if an officer or trooper looses his radio the dispatcher can send a message to the specific radio and place it in lost or stolen mode. This makes the radio nothing more than a pretty paperweight.

Another example that you might here Tulsa PD in OKC is if they are patched to a regional or Statewide Channel. It just depends on what is going on and who needs to communicate where. That was the whole purpose of having a statewide system. You might also here Tulsa PD dispatching Armed Robbery calls on the Tulsa County Channels in OKC because they patch all main Tulsa City and County Channels together when they dispatch those types of calls.

The moral of this story is that the City of Tulsa/State of Oklahoma system was set up to allow any agency with 800 capabilities to talk on any 800 tower anywhere in the state. While this is not the norm, it can easily be done.
