Wanted to say hello, and get back up to speed with the air waves

Been away from the scanner scene for a while, and now I am lost with the new digital trunking systems. Come here to learn, and get back up to speed.

Spent several years with my father (RIP) listening to the scanner as a kid, and then continued to the point of getting very familar with the systems in use around me when my wife and I where members of our local fire department.

Unfortuantely we went different directions than the fire department, and lost interested in listening to the radio.

Now the kids have an interest in what is going on around us, and my old scanner is outdated, as well as my old kenwood two-way radio, due to the trunking system here in Indiana.

Time to learn this new system in use here and research a good digital trunking scanner to hear what is going on again.

I checked your area freqs and right now your county is not digital or analog trunked,but it looks like the Clay County Sheriff is doing something with the Indiana Project Hoosier SAFE-T radio system which is a Motorola Type II SmartZone Omnilink type radio system,so you would need a digital radio system capable scanner to listen to the Sheriff when they start using digital radios.

Some would be the Uniden Bearcat BCD996XT or the GRE PSR-600

But if you don't want a digital scanner,you could check out these regular scanners.

In fact the Sheriff department around here does already use the Hoosier SAFE-T system, as well as the local fire and EMS, but they do dispatch from the old analog VHF as well too.

The local fire departments make it to the scene on VHF high, then switch over to SAFE-T when on scene.

They were purchasing these radios about the time we quit the fire department, and my friend on the sheriff's department were getting their new radios as well. They all followed suit of the state police around here, which have had theirs for years.
