I made an account here in 2011 and have just sat back and lurked a bit. I have been into scanning off and on for the past twelve years. I have recently bought two RTL-SDRs and it has been a blast again. I am loving SDR more than my TRX-1 at the moment. I have been an EMT for the past six years and worked for a few agencies in Caddo and Natchitoches parish so I hope I can help out with the knowledge I have from using and scanning the local systems.

PS Thank you to everyone on the forum that I have gained knowledge from over the years.

I've been thinking about playing with SDR, but hadn't bit the bullet yet. My listening is about half conventional and half P25 trunk on the MOSWIN system. Which dongles and software are you using.
I also dispatch for the local volunteer fire dept. and have programmed Motorolas, Vertex, Icom and Taits along with several types of scanners, but still trying to wrap my mind around how to do sdr... but I guess I just need to take the dive once I figure out exactly what I need and go from there lol.
Chemo-brain from treatments really clouds my thinking at times too...but I'm still here at least

I bought two of the RTL-SDR.com SDRs. For trunking I am using Universal Trunker. I also listen to our P25 system and use DSD+, Universal Trunker, and Virtual Audio Cable in order to monitor the digital system. I also use PDW to decode the 911 alpha numeric paging system for the city and parish fire departments.
Also I had a RadioShack discone antenna outdoors already so I split the connection and have been using it with great results.

This quick start guide is what I first read and why I went for it. https://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-quick-start-guide/

RTL-SDR TUTORIAL: DECODING DIGITAL VOICE (P25, DMR, NXDN, D-STAR) WITH DSD https://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-radio-scanner-tutorial-decoding-digital-voice-p25-with-dsd/

FOLLOWING TRUNKED RADIO WITH UNITRUNKER https://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-tutorial-following-trunked-radio-unitrunker/

Hope that helps and don't let the chemo keep you down dive into SDR and have fun you're not going to screw anything up permanently.
