I've used a few Pryme bluetooth adapters...they are okay. Would recommend a quality HT with weather proof connectors if going that route though.

The one I'm really liking currently is the X10DR wireless speaker mic. Not as practical for motorcycle use but there are some guys using them with mobile radios.

I am a lineman for the county.
I've no problem with 12 or even 16 inches as long as it's flexible. Am I right in thinking that the tuning is really only a matter of length? And if there's more to it, such as impedance matching, can I just do that with a coil?

1/4 wave is just a length of wire attached to the center of the coax. Adjusting length adjusts the resonate frequency. It's close enough to the 50 ohms the radio wants to see to work.

Not so with 1/2 wave and 5/8's wave. Those are characteristically not 50 ohms, so matching is required. A coil would need to be wound. Not hard, to do, but it might be easier to just order what you want.

A good portable radio antenna is probably your best bet. Panorama does make a 1/4 wave mobile antenna that is super flexible, so does StiCo. Not a cheap option. Since you've already built a box with the correct connectors, just find a high gain UHF portable radio antenna and go with that.

I've had a look at the X10DR wireless speaker mic. It looks like a very good option. Three points make it seem ideal:
1. The version with 6 pin Hirose connector can take external mic & speakers (i.e. helmet headset),
2. Unplugging the headset allows it to work as a speaker mic,
3. The vehicle PTT will open the X10DR mic

Now to find a price and an outlet!!

They have a remote PTT option for a momentary push button that can be wired in. What I don't know is where the hirose connector is. If it's on the bottom then the handset can't be in the cradle while being used.

They run about $400.
