Anyone in the Columbus ohio area willing to take sometime to help a new guy out??? Help me learn some of the lingo and how to program a Pro 95 scanner!!!!! Any help would be appriciated!!

Just new to everything would like to have someone show me the basics on the thing read the manual but still alot of lingo and stuff like the alpha tags and all that would like someone to set down with me and show me!!!

Alpha Tags can really be called AlphaNumeric Tags.
With the older non AlphaNumeric Tag capable radio scanners, you would program in the frequency and that was it.
With the newer ones, you program in the frequency and the AlphaNumeric Tag, this is the "Tag" or "Name" of the Agency or Business that you are listening to. So if a radio scanner stops on, say for example, 155.6100 and you have it programmed with an AlphaNumeric Tag/Name of Municipal Police then it will display 155.6100 and Municipal Police.
Now it gets a little tricker when more then one agency in your area uses the same frequency for the same purpose then even AlphaNumeric Names will NOT help, then you have to listen to unit numbers identify themselves with numbers.
Say you are listening to 155.6100 and you hear unit 99xx give his voice id, then you know that this is Municipality A but when unit 10xx ids then you know it is Municiplaity B. Sometimes they just migh use shorthand and use three digits instead of all four, so it may sound liek "Car 9XX" but that is the same as saying "Car 99XX".
Other times 155.6100 might be used by Municipality A & B under an agreed upon name like Eastern Burbs or more then one agency may use it but they use different P.L.s/D.P.L.s so it is good to know which agency uses which P.L.s or D.P.L.s.

Still no help I punched in all the Freq's for Columbus PD and all the control channels in 1 bank like it says in the manual but all I am getting is static and it wont scann stays on 1 channel Anyone willing to meet with me and help me out I WOULD APPRIC will pay someone for their time or buy em lunch or SOMETHING for the help ANYONE???????

Thee is one thing that you need to be aware of. If I recall/remember correctly, the Pro-95 WILL NOT Trunk Track L.T.R.. If you want to Trunk Track L.T.R.; you have to do it manually. I do NOT think that it will Trunk Track Digital Systems either Conventional or Trunked.
Now wheter or NOT it would decode Digital P-25 Conventional ystems with AOR's Digital Decoder is anybody's guess.

ok you gave me the link to follow in your previous message!!! The one with the marcus in it I tried to program all the freq's in the columbus one in 1 bank like it told me to in the manual control and all all I get on any of them is a machine gun sound Any answers???

Columbus Police/Fire are on the Franklin County Public Safety trunked system. With a PRO 95 you need only program the control channels (see database at RadioReference.) Be sure it is in the Motorola mode. It will search the talkgroups. You can manually program in the talkgroups you want to hear (also in RadioReference database). I put the police talkgroups in one bank and fire in another so you can hear both or just one if you wish. See the book for open and closed banks which will give you only what you want to hear. Put conventional frequencies in another bank. You'll be surprised how easy it is once you get the hang of it.
Don't get too attached to the PRO 95. Columbus is supposedly going to go digital (hopefully Motorola, not EDACS Provoice which you won't be able to hear) in the near future and you'll need a digital scanner.

Sounds like you dont have it setup for trunking. Im guessing that what you are hearing is a control channel. It may help you if you pickup win95 and use it for programming, at least until you get the hang of the radio. http://www.starrsoft.com/freeware/win95/default.asp

Also if I remember correctly; you cannot scan I-Calls with Radio Shack/GRE radio scnners like you can with the Uniden radio scanners.
You mentioned something about Marcus. What exactly is that?

Do not forget that there are two seperate Trunked Radi oSystesm in Columbus. One is for Polioce/Fire/Squads, while the other is for Raod Crews, C.O.T.A., Snow Plows and P.D./F.D./Squad backups.
Also, I think that O.S.U. has it s own Trunked Radio System
