If you plug in headphones or an external speaker and they sound fine, you whacked the internal speaker. The voice coil of the speaker might be partly detached from the diaphragm and not allowing the diaphragm to move properly.

+1 on what rivardj said. It's possible that the speaker just shifted out of its resting place (and is vibrating against something it should not), but it's more likely it's broken.

Headphones sound the same its hard to explain the sound almost like a far away AM signal again no da,age to the case or screen maybe open it and look? Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else I wouldn't think I small drop that wasn't even hard enough to damage case would do this?

Might have cracked a trace on the audio amp or cpu.

You were using stereo headphones, right? If not, the audio will be low, as you are shorting out half of the amp.

Yes stero headphones, what would be easiest way to tell what happened & if I can fix it? Should I open it up & look inside for any damage?

That happened to my BC245XLT i dropped it and it started sounding like you described i would suggest may plugging some extra computer speakers to it..I'm using a non powered speaker that just plugs into the 1/8" jack and it works great!

It's likely a cracked trace somewhere which can be nearly impossible to find (especially if it's an inner layer trace).

My advice:

1. Get it repaired by Uniden.

2. Buy a nice leather case.

The WX sounds ok, took it apart put back together seems not picking up as much signal and sounds like crap, anyone know of a place in San Diego that can look at and repair it? Don't want a $500 paper weight! I also tried reprogramming it.

If the WX is ok, perhaps you just cracked the antenna connection. Still, sending it to Uniden is the best course.
