Help finding frequency for school

For the past couple of months I've been trying to find the frequency to my school. So far i know its not part of the family band. another thing i know is that its a simple walkie talkie probably from radio shack, no idea what tho but some type of really simple handheld unit. Not many buttons, I think just a like three for changing volume, squelch, and perhaps channel but im not 100% sure about it. i also know that its not like some private channel, because no matter where i look i can't find it listed as a private freq.

Was wondering if anyone might have any ideas as to what the frequency might be?

The best way to find it would be a scanner with Close Call or Signal Stalker. If you don't have either of those, then walk up to one of the guys that are sitting there doing nothing. Tell him you are wanting to get some radios and you liked their model. You just wanted to write down the model number on the back of it. Come back and find that model number and the frequencies it uses

I've tried that, there so old that they dont have anything on them, and they dont know where to look or anything, so basically they weren't of any help. I'm working with a Pro-95, and so I dont think it has close call or signal stalker.

What is the name of the school. There might be freqs listed on a site or perhaps in the FCC DB.

Try some common walkie talkie freqs for schools and other businesses

My school used 154.570. I've monitored those freqs using a large antenna and heard plenty of other schools on them too.

Also search the 464 MHz range since it could be there.

Prolly wont be able to hear them from 3 or 4 miles.
If they are just handhelds they wont have a lot of power.

the school district has a VHF license that expired back in June, but that does not mean they are not using the frequency of 154.540 that is shown on that license.

They also have a license for UHF 462.45 and 467.45

At my school, they use simple two-ways broadcasting to a repeater's input at about 467 MHz, with the output around 464 MHz. I think the radios are old Motorolas, with only volume and squelch controls. I can't hear the input frequency from a mile away, but I can hear the output when I'm about 15 miles away .

The Pro-95 doesn't have Close Call. Thats new technology only in the most recent scanners. Anyhow it's most likely going to be one of the business band frequencies. The schools in my city are using 154.6950. What the radio looks like and has on it won't have any bearing on what freq it's on.

It would help to know what school we're talking about. Someone might be able to find fcc data for that. Usually not the school itself but licensed to the school district. Like in the RR database for my area, Mississippi Harrison County, when I select show all licenses (SLOW) It comes up with: BILOXI MUNICIPAL SEPARATE SCHOOL DI WZX803 154.96500 2005-03-11 1 0 FB 20K0F3E PW BILOXI.

That happens to be the info for the Biloxi schools. So go back to the RR database and choose your county, and then at the very bottom choose to look at all of the licenses in the county, maybe you'll see one for the school district, and it might help you find out what they're on.

That yields 462.45000 for WEST IRONDEQUOIT SCHOOL DISTRICT.

haha wierd, i think thats what the ones they use are. they look like they are 20 years old, just pure black, no buttons, and only knobs for volume and squelch like you said.

btw, thanks for the link to that listing page, that was quite detailed, can't believe i hadn't seen that. i'll bring my scanner to school tomorow and give it a go. thanks.

One frequency is the repeater input - the frequency the portables transmit on. (The FCC lists that as a Mobile frequency.) That's pretty much line of sight.

The other is the repeater output. (The FCC lists that as a Fixed/Base frequency.) Range depends on transmitter power, antenna gain and antenna height. Don't be disappointed if you can't receive it much beyond the boundaries of school property. Then again, it may cover all of Irondequoit, or even all of the metro area (Rochester, IIRC).

It is....

Down here I can hear the city's school buses talk to a dispatch and they're using simplex. I can hear them pretty much anywhere in the city which is about 12 miles long. They're dispatch must be close to me because CLOSECALL locked onto them one day when driving through my neighborhood.
