You never really provided the make and model of the base unit you have, or whether you have an outside antenna. If you don't have a trunking scanner, you will not be able to hear Hobbs / Lea County Trunking System If you have one, do you have this system programmed? This can be a bit over whelming to the beginner. Did someone program your base unit for you, or did you do it yourself?

I think you will need to tell us what agency(local police/fire/EMS or county police/fire/EMS) you only hear part of the conversations. If you have the trunking system programmed as a conventional(not trunking), you will definitely only hear parts of conversations.

As I mentioned in my previous response, you may be hearing only the base. Please try to tell us if you only hear part of BOTH base and mobile units, or just the BASE and not the mobiles.
Without a lot more details, we can't tell if you really need a new scanner, a better antenna, or just the correct programing.

Apparently, you have trouble with questions in paragraph form, so
1. Do you have an outside antenna?
2. If not, does you home have aluminum siding(new question)
3.Did you program your scanner, or did someone else?
4.Do you know if you have Hobbs / Lea County Trunking System programmed?
5. What agencies are you have trouble hearing only part?
a. Local Fire or Police or EMS
b. County Fire or Police or EMS
c. Hobbs / Lea County Trunking System (if programmed)
6. Do you only hear the Dispatch Base Stations and not the mobile(cars, fire engines, EMS trucks)
7 Do you hear only parts of BOTH the base and mobiles?

Question 6 didn't have an "a" subsection. Didn't you like the other questions?

If you don't provide much information, you won't get much help. People here are more than happy to help you, but if you aren't willing to put enough effort into at least providing some information, you'll find that that willingness will quickly disappear.

You could have started by clearing explaining your situation and problem in sentences that have a beginning and an end. Since you didn't do that, CaptClint was kind enough to try to get the information needed for us to help you. That apparently didn't work for you ("wat huh") so he made the questions even clearer. You still haven't answered them.

Ok, here's the situation. Your county Sheriff repeater on 155.31000 is close enough that you should hear everything except when they go car-to-car. Since you seem to indicate this is what you have trouble hearing(best guess based on your answering the wrong question), I am suspecting that they may have moved most of their communications to the trunking system. Since you did not answer my question, I gather you do not have the trunking system programmed. Here is what you need to do to get more help.

Go to the New Mexico Radio Discussion Forum and tell them you have a BC-898T with no outside antenna. You do not have Hobbs / Lea County Trunking System programmed, and you wonder if most of the Sheriff traffic has moved to the trunking system, or do they still use 155.31000 a lot. If they still use 155.31, then you must be in a bad location to hear properly. An outside antenna may be your only answer, and may be absolutely necessary to get 800mhz trunking.

If they tell you you really need to program the Hobbs / Lea County Trunking System , ask them if you will need a firmware update due to rebanding. I seem to recall EDACS (which is what this system is) may not need an update. If you do have to get a firmware update for the scanner, here is the page that tells you what to do: BC898TFirmwareUpdate < UnidenMan4 < TWiki This is a fairly involved process, so if they don't know, you can post that question on the Uniden Scanners - The RadioReference.com Forums.
