I just purchased a Baofeng DM-1701 radio and I am wanting to program in Kossuth SO/ Algona PD, Emmet SO/ Estherville PD, Pocahontas SO/ PD, Humboldt SO/ PD, Clay SO/ Spencer PD, and also Dallas SO. Most of them are in our MART program and or I drive through them 1-2 times a week and listen while I drive for something to do I already have Palo Alto SO/ Emmetsburg PD where I am a reserve officer also my brother in law works for Dallas Co SO that’s why I want to try and listen to them. it was easier to figure programming when it was all Analog but now I am trying to figure out all this DMR and just feel lost/ overwhelmed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most of NW Iowa is P25 on VHF. Depending on your scanner, you can download the frequencies directly from Radio Reference.
Not many SO/PD agencies are on the ISICS or SARA systems. To my knowledge, there is no DMR in NW Iowa for law enforcement. ISP is on ISICS. However, dependent on your location - you may or may not receive any transmissions as there are not many ISICS/SARA towers around the area.

No your radio will not monitor P25, you will need to get a P25 scanner to listen, there are no inexpensive radios that monitor that mode, not to mention linking your radio to their system would be a threat to the public safety users and might get your radio bricked or you in serious trouble if not programmed correctly, with the proper programming software.

You'll be better off with a scanner.

So just with my department issued Motorola radio is the only way I’ll be able to monitor this area then since that’s already programmed. I just enjoy learning more on communications and thought I would see if I could figure this all out like I did analog.

Kossuth Co., Humboldt Co., and Calhoun Co. are on ISICS. ISICS is a P25 Phase 2 700/800 mhz system. Sac County is also migrating to ISICS.
