To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey all,

I work for a company that has a channel on a repeater and one that is talk around. I work in security and would like to have my radio programed with all the local LE agencies in it just to monitor. What I would like to know is:

If I am at a location within the agencies specific district (say channel 7 is districts A and T) then could I program my radio to just scan the LE channel 7 and my companies w channels without having to scan through every channel programmed into my radio? I basically want to scan just the channel for the district that I am in and my company's 2 channels. Also, I want to be able to set my company's channel 1 to be the one that the radio uses when I tx.

I am using an MTS 2000 SN: H01SDD9PW1BN

As I said, I an new to this and I know that every number in the SN means something.

Thanks!!

What you are describing is possible, yes. You can set up different scan lists with the specific channels you want to scan.

Is that based on the MTS2000 specifications or based on each radios model number. If its based on what the model number means what is the specific part that I would look. I do have a serial number chard that says what each number means.

Thanks again for the help.

I dont mean to be asking stupid questions, but I just do not want to purchase a radio that does not do what I want. I know the MTS scans but will I be able to select each LE channel to scan with my company channels even if I change districts and change the one LE channel that I want to scan?

Thanks again for everything!

If you set up the user select for the scan list you can change the scan list members from the keypad.

You can likely setup a scanlist in the software to do what you want to do. But what happens when your radio is stopped on one of the LE channels and someone is trying to call you on your channel?

I find if it's a work radio, and it's expected to be on a channel, it should likely stay on that channel. Might be easier and less trouble to just pickup a cheap scanner perhaps.

I believe what you can do is possible, though cumbersome.

Each slot on the physical channel selector can be mapped to a given "personality" in the radio. A "personality" is a set of parameters, such as Rx freq, Tx freq (or RXO), tones, etc. One of the parameters is scan list. So you can effectively change scan lists by changing the selected channel.

Obviously, you'll put your working channel in slot 1, and the agency channels you want to listen to in other slots. For those "listen only" personalities, you can create a scan list that: (a) includes your working channel as a member, (b) designated that channel as priority, and (c) designates that channel as the fixed Tx channel if Tx is engaged while in that scan list.

The programming metaphor for the MTS2000 series radios actually makes sense, but it is not intuitive and you will have a good deal of trouble specifying what you want in a form that your programmer will understand. So it would be a good idea to sit down with the programmer, explain your goals, and then work out the details of the program. Expect a few "do loops" in any event.
