If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi all, I have a Vertex VX537 that I am not getting any RX audio from. Now when I power up the radio I hear the audible alert tones and the tones when you switch different channels, but no RX audio at all. Also, the LED indicator doesn't flash green either even when another exact VX537 has audio coming from it on the same channel. The radio will transmit however. Anyone know what the issue could be? I don't believe it is a blown speaker due to the fact that I am hearing alert tones. Any help you guys can give is much appreciated.

Make sure you have the correct frequency and tone. Since the radio isn't showing a light when it should hear a frequency I would say the frequency is incorrect.

Yes everything is correct. Nothing in the radio has changed. Frequency and tone information is the same exact as other exact radios. It happens on every channel selected.

Can you unsquelch the radio so you hear just noise? One of the buttons on the side or front if
pressed and held for a few seconds should do that, if it has been programmed, or you can program
one button to do so if you have the program software, With radio unsquelched see if you can
hear transmissions that a second radio on same frequency can hear. If you hear the transmissions
then could be an issue with your tone setting or receive circuit. If you can't hear any transmissions
with radio unsquelched, then probably you have issues with receive circuits. I've seen that happen
with the Vertex VX417/420 series when one of the Ceramic Filters leads comes off its solder pad.
Assuming your radio is not under warranty and you feel comfortable disassembling it, you should
check both sides of the circuit board for any evidence of a part that has come loose off its solder
pad. Particularly check the ceramic filters (large white square components in the 417/420 series).
If this is a VHF band radio, try to program in your local NWS station (make sure it is on by
verifying with another radio) and see if you hear it.
My guess is you have receiver circuit issues.

Read out the radio and save the file.

Open a NEW file and enter two channels, both on the frequency of your local NWS endless loop. Set one channel as narrow and one as wide - no other differences. Set the squelch to zero and write it to the radio.

If you can hear both equally well it your program and not the radio (proviso- compare reception to another radio to make sure both are not weak). If you can hear the wide but not the narrow is is one of Vertex's 'Easter egg' ceramic filters that hatched and failed. That is a common failure.

If both are bad best of luck. Find a shop with a service monitor and have them do an alignment. If that fails your radio is wanting to go home for the holidays and visit mom and the cousins.
