Help Programming a PRO-97*

Let me start by saying that I am very, very new to this. And I've been reading all the threads that I can, the wiki's, and trying to learn as much as I can. I keep trying to apply what I'm reading but at the end of the day I'm more lost now then when I began. So anyone could help me out, I'd be unbelievably grateful.

I am in Archuleta County, Colorado. The town is Pagosa Springs. Here are the base frequencies I've found.

Q: These both cover my area. Is one better than the other? Do I need to use both?

Q: The system type is Project 25 Standard, APCO-25. Is this the Motorola programing mode?

You can program it into a Pro-96. They are both digital format (P-25). The 97 is an analog TT only.

The Pro-97 will not work on the system http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=329 at all, it isn't capable of the APCO-25/P-25 type of transmissions.

Some good news and some bad news.

First the good news is that your county system is conventional (see this link). So your PRO-97 will work nicely for them.

Now for the bad news. The PRO-97 cannot receive digital (APCO25) signals. So though you are on the right track you will not get there with the current equipment.

Digital capable scanners (and keep in mind that digital and encryption are not the same thing) include the PRO96, the Uniden 396 and the GRE PSR-500. They all list for around $500, but if you shop around a bit you can find new ones for around $450 and used (check E-bay) for even less.

So I am not sure if trying to help you with the right system is really going to help because all you would hear would be something that sounds like a motorboat or chain saw. About all you would gain from this is practice setting up a trunked system if you were to buy a PRO96. The 396 and 500 set up their systems differently.

My recommendation is go with the 396 or 500. They are newer, have better features, may be upgraded with firmware upgrades and won't have issues with rebanding that is looming in the near future.
