Well, to start off I have looked at a few articles on RR about MILCOMS and I was hoping I could get a bit of interpretation/opinion. My very basic and general understanding of how to scan MIL freqs. is to program some search limits into my Pro-106 and pray for a hit on a freq. I hope that isn't my only option for scanning the MIL, but thus far it seems like it is. I live in downtown Kansas City, MO, so I am kinda close to Whiteman Airforce Base and alot closer to Fort Leavenworth. I have tried to pick up both of them, but it seems I am too far away to pick up either of them. I know there must be some freq. that Whiteman uses to communicate to their pilots because I have seen MIL aircraft flying over the city, but I've never gotten a hit on any of my search limits so I don't know of any. Any thoughts? I am completely new at scanning MIL freqs. and less than a year old scanner enthusiast so any help would be great. Thanks.

Hey Elliot, welcome to the hobby, I'm not new, but not a pro either with MilAir monitoring, but hopefully I can help you some... I'm not local to your area, so I can't say what frequencies you should be programming exactly, hopefully some locals chime in here, but I would suggest devoting a bank in your scanner to MilAir, and programming in the specific frequencies for the Tower and Arrival/Departure at both Airfields you mentioned and actually scan them, not just search. As well you might want to add any CivAir control freqs for your area, since they will check in with traffic control at some point. If you can see them, you should be able to hear them.

Doing a continuos search as you said you are, would likely net you poor results since your searching such a wide area, as compared to directly scanning the actual freqs which is much more effiecient, since your only focused on a few channels....I typically find the less channels I'm searching, or scanning, the more likely I am to find what I'm looking for, especially with MilAir., the main reason is the transmissions are typically very short, and to the point, as with all aircraft communications.. MilAir is no different, and usually even shorter depending on what they are doing..hope this helps. Dont be shy to ask more questions.

About the only public information on military airports is going to be on Airnav and the FAA airport lookup web sites.
AirNav: KSZL - Whiteman Air Force Base
https://airports-gis.faa.gov/airpor...irportDisplay.jsp?category=nasr&airportId=szl
AirNav: KFLV - Sherman Army Airfield
https://airports-gis.faa.gov/airpor...irportDisplay.jsp?category=nasr&airportId=flv

You might try searching old posts at Milcom Monitoring Post and the Milcom and Milair mailing list archives at Mailing Lists @ QTH.Net
