Help Santa decide which XX96 scanner to bring on Christmas!

Santa is soooo confused. Because he has had neither and he wants me to have both he needs you guys to help him decide which one to bring down the chimney!

I have posted some questions

All of the higher end scanners have the ability to have info loaded and some of the have the ability download freqs but the PRO-XX96s will not have the ability to control the action of the scanner.


Is this right?

Is the lack of a AGC in the BCX96Ds going to drive me nuts or will I overlook it?

What are the must have features that the PROXX96 radios have that the BCX96 radios don't?

have you read the thread comparing the 96 and the 296? many of your questions should be answered in that thread.

Our city just switched over to MOT DIGITAL. I PGM for all local media. They all bought BC-796's [15 total] and all of the wreckers that tow on the city pull list bought PRO-96's. [4] total. One security co bought 5 BC-796's and one BC-296. The security co sold the 296 within 10 days to the local news paper. Said it was dorky to operate. I did not take time to play with the 296. There is an issue with turning on or off banks in scan mode. You must be very careful not to turn off trunking ID's. This is not an issue with the PRO-96 you can turn off any bank at any time. My reply is not in the format you posted but based on fact. I also own a BC-796 and PRO-96. Good Luck, Larry

They are really apples to oranges Scott. What do you intend to do with it?

Do you travel alot and walk around listening to your scanner in various locales around the country? If so, a PRO-96 is probably what you want, due to it's ease of use and V-folders.

Do you only scan in your vehicle? If so then a 796 might be the ticket.

Do you need portability and LTR? Only the 296 fits this bill.

Want vscanners in a mobile scanner? Then the 2096 is your choice.

I own both the PRO-96 and the 796. I also have the 250D. Put them all together, and you have the ultimate scanner - each one offers something the others don't.

the pro96 and upcoming 2096 do not have computer control. they do allow you to program them using don starr's win96. i cant speak for the 296 or 796 on whether they allow computer control.

alot of people i have talked to say they hate having to continuously adjust the volume on thier 296. the pro96 is awesome in "leveling out" digital transmissions.

V-FOLDERS RULE! honestly... dishing out $500 for "11 digital scanners" is one hell of a deal! i have yet to fill 1/2 of the 11 folders in the 96. also note (as you mentioned eariler) that the 96 and 2096 have AGC.

To answer some of your questions so far...

I am very partial to GRE radios for many reasons although I have owned both manufacturers of comparable radios at the same time.

I am also very partial to remote controlled radios.
I plan on having the radio connected to an antenna farm and remotely controlled and heard over the net. I know that the GRE radios are not remotely controlled.

Are the features of the GRE so good that I will over look this and forget all about my want to hookup the scanner to the net for remote control?

I like the aspect that the GRE radios have virtual scanners. I am not sure that it would make a big difference because I do not move often between big enough Metro areas for it to make a difference. I also have taken into account the fact that I usually have laptop with me when I am and I can load freqs in that way.

I know I can read the comparison thread and I have, but I want your biased answers to the questions I posed. I want this because you may have a reason why one particular radio is better that the other based on your use of the radio.

If you have taken the time to vote in the poll do me a favor and justify your vote.
