Hi, newbie here wondering how to upload a P95 file into a pro-95 scanner.
I had the scanner programed at the RS but I wanted to load a p95 preprogrammed file using the WIN95 program. I downloaded the program and found several p95 preprogramed files, I downloaded the files and opened them in the Win95 program. I clicked the "scanner" tab in the program and selected "upload to scanner", then I get an error type message saying "unable to open port//COM 1/". I'm using a serial port on the back of my computer and am using the RS cable (20-289). Anyone know how to get me up and running?? thanks in advance, rue

I'm sorry I have a pro-95 not a pro-96. I think I downloaded the right one...

ok, if you have a Pro95 and Win95, that error message sounds like something has your serial port tied up. Could be camera, palm device something like that.

Also, there is no telling what the port on the back of the computer is configured as. Could be COM2, maybe 3 or 4. You need to make sure you know what it is first, or choose another COM port in Win95 then try again. When you exahust those, then start looking for what may have the port tied up.

I have no clue what's wrong...I changed my ports a bunch of times with the device manager and changed the posts in the config. tab on WIN95. It says it can't open no matter what I do. I have nothing connected at this point besides a keyboard, mouse and moniter... All which have there own ports that are not serial except the moniter.

All you need is Win95, the proper cable and a little computer know how.

Correct!

rue, it seems to me that there are some issues with XP in regard to using the RS-232 ports. I don't have XP (a most confusing OS IMO) so maybe someone else that has conqured this beast will chime in with some help. 8)

I am using both XP Pro and XP Home and have never had a problem. My guess is that he has something already running on the com port (you do not have to have something hooked up to the computer for it to be using the com port). Changing the com port settings in the device manager will get you no where. If you have one serial port on the computer then it is com port 1. Check your start up folder and see what is running when you start the computer up. Also check the startup in msconfig. You could be looking for software that has to do with a PDA, camera, GPS and so on.

Okay, finally got it to work. I tried for a couple of hours to understand how these serial ports work and how to fix my problem and got no where.
I was going to go try to find a usb>serial port adapter or something like that when I thought I'd try another "spare" computer I have..
It's also loaded with XP. I plugged in the 20-289 cable to the serial port and loaded up WIN95 and the p95 files i selected from a floppy disc. I hit the upload to scanner tab and the scanner went into clone mode and uploaded the file... Wierd. The first computer must have a bug or be connected wrong on the com port. I wish I knew more about how to fix it but for now I'm in business.

I'm also reading a feed by fish4it using Win92 on XP, his problem is the same as yours. Both of you have a port issue which can only be resolved by closing the device/program which is assigned to the port, likely 1 if that is the only serial port. Ctrl+Alt+Delete (the old windows way) will produce a Task Manager popup which will list the aps running. Click on Processes tab and find your culprit, then highlight and end the buzzard sucking up the port. BTW, I just launched Hotsync and it added to the top of this buzzard list and uses com4.

Due to my avid interest, this PC has 5 9 pin serial ports. Com1, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
