Hello, I am new at this so be patient. I want to download some trunked system in to my scanners. BC785D, BC250D,BC296BC & BCD996T. I use Scan Control software to program my radios. Will that work with the downloading? If so, how do I do it? I have Pro Scan too, but the free version, will that work? Or do I have to upgread to the $50.00 version? I have programmed the NJ State PD trunked system manually. So I know a little about it. The ones I'm trying to do now are new digital trunked system, Bayonne NJ, Jersey City NJ and Ocean County's system. I know Ocean County isn't new or digital.

As this is a software question, I will have it moved....

Scan Control doesn't have the ability to connect to the database, however ProScan does - and it works with all your scanners. If you find that you need to do a lot of downloading, and want remote support, then ProScan fills the bill. I'd register it - Bob (ProScan author) is constantly working on improvements; it kinda seems like Ken (Scan Control) is dragging his feet a bit, and trying to take on too much in a single release.

The Scannersoft website has a video, if memory serves, on how to use the Data Grabber (which is the copy/paste tool). In brief, to use the Data Grabber, you must start at the upper left corner of the title to a particular table (yes, inside the titles), then drag to the lowest right corner **1 row below where you wish to stop copying** and copy to the clipboard(yes, that's peculiar - I agree, but the description is correct). You then bring up the Scan Control edit form, place the cursor in the alpha text area, which should un-grey the Grabber selection. Then Paste (I'm doing this from memory, as I can't install anything on my machine at work. The video will confirm what I'm saying). Here's the link to the page with the videos

http://www.scannersoft.com/datagrabber.htm

For example if we look at this entry

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=142

Under Zone B2, if I wanted all the talkgroups up to the last Criminal Investigations talkgroup, I would start by putting my cursor in the upper left next to 'DEC' and drag all the way down to the right corner, making sure that the 'Department of Human Services' talkgroup was also highlighted. When I paste, the Human services talkgroup and description should not be copied, but I should get all 4 of the Criminal Investigations talkgroups (it sounds more complicated than it is, really)

To me, it's a bit clumsy, but it does work. We did try to get Ken to put in the RR Import function but he didn't want to do it. A shame, really.

More questions

So, if I buy ProScan or download the demo on one of my other computers it will be much easer to load the trunked system? How about firmware? Is that something that is easy to do?

Thanks

As to downloading the trunk system data the answer is yes, it's likely to be much easier. You will need to purchase (cheap) a premium subscription to enable this function.

However firmware updates are a totally different animal. Your first steps are to go to the Uniden website and register your 996. If you are using an early firmware version (likely if you've never done this before), you will need to apply an ESN loader before upgrading the firmware. I'm sure there are other 996 owners on here that can guide you through the steps - they're likely not all that different from the 396, which is the radio I have.

Is the premium subscription to radio Referance? I bought some subscription to RR. Will that set all my settings? Not just the freq's and TG? Thanks

It is not designed to hit settings like your quick keys, end codes and other things. It will load frequencies, talkgroups, alpha tags (to the limits of whatever scanner you are using) and attempt to set up the correct system type for trunks. Downloading conventional freqs will set PL or DCS codes where appropriate.

The rest is up to you 73 Mike
