i read about trunking and talk around but what are they and can i pick them up with my scanner

The PRO-99 is not a trunk tracking scanner, so while you can monitor the frequencies in a trunked system, you can't track specific conversations.
Talkaround just means units talking directly to each other without using a repeater. Assuming you are within range, and you are tuned to the correct frequency, you can listen to a talkaround conversation.
