New owner of 396xt and used FreeScan to upload frequencies for Polk County after importing from Radio Reference database. I am receiving transmissions, but there are issues. The scanner will pick up certain "groups" for a time with no other dispatch areas being heard. For instance I am in Bartow and right now getting only NW dispatch and nothing else. Other times has been only TAC and still other times only SW dispatch. Do I have control channel problems? I never hear Bartow PD, any Fire/EMS, etc. What am I missing? Thanks for helping a newbie.

There are several Polk County systems in the database most are obsolete. You should only need the Polk County (Project 25) Public Safety System .. if this is properly loaded you should have the opposite problem of hearing too many groups with many needing to be locked out (buillding maintenance, transit, etc.) I would suggest resetting the scanner and loading only the Polk County (Project 25) Public Safety System and see how it goes.
If you are sure that your programming is already ok it may just be poor reception of the digital signal, because honestly it really sucks. I can only assume that the Motorola equipment that is in use by the agencies is much more complex than this scanner because there is no way the real users could have the quality reception that I have because the system would be truly unusable.
The only place so far I can get any decent reception is on the top of one of the tallest buildings in downtown Lakeland, and even then although I can receive all transmissions they still sound like crap and are hard to understand.
