To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

As a favor to a neighbor, I'm trying to program his BC245XLT. The problem is that I can't seem to get the scanner to communicate over the COM port.

I've tried WinScan and ScanControl and neither will find the scanner. Both come up with error messages that the scanner cannot be found or is not communicating.

I know that the com port is operating correctly as Win95 will operate properly with my Pro95 over the same com port.

I've set up the scanner as instructed in the BC users manual (Turning it on while holding the data key down). I've checked the baud rate settings on the radio and it is set to 9600 baud.

Anyone out there have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

It's fairly simple - you only did 1/2 the work. You need to hold the 'remote' (E) key down until it beeps twice. A very tiny key symbol will appear in the lower right hand corner of the display. The scanner is now in remote mode.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the tip, I've tried what you've suggested and still no joy, I don't get the two beeps, I do get the display "1 PCCON". It still refuses to connect....

Turn the scanner on normally (let it scan, don't go into PCCON mode) and then hit the remote key as described. You will then be in REMOTE mode. The PCCON mode sets up the speed on the port to be used to communicate with the computer.

Thanks Mike,

That's what I was doing wrong, I was holding down the remote key while turning on the radio! Tried it out without hooking up to the radio and it seems to be behaving correctly now...
