If you're handy you can build the off center fed dipole - make the elements nice and wide in diameter and it will be more broad banded, and it's unobtrusive to boot. The article is here...

Not to add another wrinkle here, but it's entirely possible that the system is low power, and/or using directional antennas to concentrate coverage inside the base. Bottom line, if either or both are true, it's going to be very difficult to hear more than a mile or two away.
