I received a new scanner for Christmas. I can not find my local police, fire, or emergency services. I was hoping this handheld scanner was going to be easy to set up....so far, I have not had any luck. FYI, I am not that electronically inclined. I need simple! Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to Radio Reference! What is your city, county, and state so that I can look up the information? Do you have Uniden Sentinel installed for programming the scanner?

Here is a link to the database here on Radio Reference. You can select your state, county, then check the listings available for your area.

There also quite a number of videos on YouTube that will guide you to programming your scanner.

Hello Bo-dog54 and welcome to Radio Reference! I like your screen-name because one of my dog's name is Bo. :)

If you can tell us what you want to listen to by agency, we can help you get your scanner programmed. There is also a good reference manual on programming that scanner that I highly recommend:

We are here to help you get started with the wonderful world of scanning!

Cheers! Dave

Blanchard, Ok. McClain county. I guess I don't have a Uniden Sentinel installed since I do not know what that is.....

Thank you. I did find this information for my local channels, they just do not show up on my scanner when I entered my zip code.
I will have to check out the You tube videos.

Location??
Someone may be able to help you with specific location information / tips.

These radios can be tricky, if you don't know what you are doing.
For instance, if you don't have the right service types enabled, you won't ever be able to hear them.
Start there.

Best method to program mistake free (less), is to get Sentinel. Get it downloaded on a computer - access to Radio Reference database is included, (be sure to do an update). Then, you control exactly what is in your favorites list - and it's much easier to control WHAT you scan with favorite keys.

Okay.....stupid question, once I download Sentinel to my computer, how does that work on my hand held scanner?

Firstly, there are NO stupid questions...

As for Sentinel, that runs on your computer. You use it to set up the agencies that you want to scan. Then you hook up your scanner to your computer via a USB port with the supplied cable. Sentinel then "talks" to your scanner and dumps the necessary programming into its memory. Easy peasey!

Cheers! Dave

If you're trying to monitor your city, the 436 won't work without a paid upgrade to DMR. But the statewide system should work on your scanner, either the Phase I or the Moto Type II.

You just need to figure out how Sentinel works.
