Your best bet would be to get the programming software and cable, and purchase a premium membership to this site, then you can download directly into the software and upload it into the scanner. You won't regret it.

There are some free software programs out there, but i haven't used them so maybe someone else can chime in here. You can also do it manually, but it's a PITA and very time consuming.

You might also inquire at you local RS, and see if somebody at one of the stores has a display scanner or owns one that they can clone to get you started.

Go to RS??

2 Words - HXXX NO!

I'm going to assume here, Mr503, that you mean North Carolina - it's very important to list not just the city but the state as well, so that other like-minded folks in your area can jump in and help. We have numerous state forums - and here's the one for NC...(anything in blue is a link)

North Carolina Radio Discussion Forum - The RadioReference.com Forums

There are no free programs for the 106 - you will need either ARC500, PSREdit500 or Win500 along with a USB-serial cable for your PC (since RS in their infinite dis-wisdom didn't include that, contrary to their GRE cousins who do...). Let's start with the links for all 3 of those programs...

Object Oriented Scanner Software - The RadioReference Wiki

and as for the USB cable - note that if you get the GRE cable, it should work just fine...

Connecting scanners via USB - The RadioReference Wiki

This article also discusses loading the drivers for the cable, and how to use Windoze Device Manager to help see what ports are available.

I would look at all 3 programs - they all have a month's trial - and see which one you like best. Both ARC500 and Win500 have their own user's guides, and if you're new to this - which it sounds like you are- you would profit from reading these. Both of these guides are linked in the software article above.

When you have decided which program suits you best, jump to the NC forum and ask for a file. That way you can then copy it, and modify it to suit your needs

best regards...Mike

Pro 106 programming

If you DO go into the local RS and they ask you "what type of cell phone is that"? Walk out very quickly.

p.s. It also depends on what you want to program. If you've got one or just a few trunked systems in your area that you want to listen to, then you only need the control channels. If you're going to input conventional systems, then yes, you may benefit from programming software.
