help with these new systems in sacramento

I have a couple questions, First, with all these new systems, how do I put them in when some frequencies are missing? It says N/A. Whats that all about? How do I find systems like everybody else does because Im probably the only person on here that lives in West Sacramento. Anyone please help. One more thing, What is Nextel? Well I know they are phones, but to all the police officers is it illegal to listen to and if its not, How many miles can you hear them?

While some Nexthell systems use an older trunking format that lends itself to monitoring, it is illegal because it is part of the cellular system. Stick to legal comms monitoring.

Guys, Nextel doesn't use cellular technology. It's basically a digital SMR system (Moto's iDEN) that's been renovated in an attempt to keep up with PCS. If you had a service monitor that supported iDEN you could do all the listening you wanted to.

Nextel, be it Moto iDEN or Type II or I trunking, is within 851MHz to 866MHz. Completely legal.

Monitoring Nextel is not legal, since the service Nextel provides is a wireless telephone service. Is it TDMA, CDMA or PCS? No, but that doesn't make it any more legal.

Actually Wayne, I think it's illegal to monitor ANY mobile phone conversation, not just cellular. The restriction is not on the frequency, it's on the service.

However, Nextel does own some 900MHz SMR systems here and there which do not use phones, they work like any other radio system and are legal to monitor. I believe they go by FCI 900 Inc. or something similar.

oww ya they are phones trust me on thart i use to use them at work and its a personal conversation and like the law says listsing to a party without consent is illegal but the radio also acts as a radio but since it can be used as a phone so the LAW WINS

Guys, unless you can pull up specific rules stating otherwise, the FCC does not classify Nextel's service as cellular, PCS, or whatever making it a true telephone conversation that would fall under the law banning interception of cell service. Regardless of how the call sounds or acts the technology and band prove otherwise. It's a trunked system with telephone interconnect. Being it's full duplex matters not.

Nextel is an nationwide SMR, and is as far as any law goes, legal to monitor,... if its not encrypted. The only part that would be in that grey area would be when a Nextel radio is used to talk to a landline phone. Listening to any phone conversation is illegal....

That raises the question: Is listening to Phone Patches on any radio system therefore illegal?
