i just picked up some scanners from this lady that her husband pass away.. 1 uniden bc895xlt 1 icomic-r1 and a icom pcr1000. it also came with and antena and computer program,scancat-gold. when i try to install the progran it seems to install ok, but when i try to rum it, come back and says error 68 device anavailable.

Do you have it pointing to a serial port that exists?

went to radio shack and bought a serial port to usb cable and installed it.

still nothing. is it the computer not being able to read the port

You have to go thru a step to put the radio in Remote Mode so it is communicating. If the manual for it is anything like what it is for the 898 it will be of no help.
Looked at the PDF manual Butel makes available it says (for the 898):
Switch on your scanner, verify the scanner is enabled for RS232 serial communication: press and hold the Line/rmt button, now you can use the main vfo know to select a baudrate, select 57600 for best performance and ***press E button to confirm and enable remote mode***
That should do you.

And are you pointing the program to the serial port the usb->serial adapter claims to be?

i got it,the comp port on the setup was wrong...thank you all
