To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm a recently retired female firefighter that just purchased an Apco25-Pro-96 scanner so I can continue to at least monitor calls. I've had scanners for Years, but we just went digital, and I'm having some problems learning the new scanner...it's quite different than what I'm used to!! I can't figure out how to put the priority channel in...do I have to wait till it comes up? I've read and re-read the booklet, but still aren't sure where to put in my 'old' VHF frequencies. I'm new here, and would apprieciate any help!!! f

Well the priority can only be used with a conventional frequency (non-trunked). Press PGM then PRI, enter your frequency and hit ENTER. Now it's programmed, to turn it on press PRI and the display will say PRIon if it was off and PRIoff if it was on, just toggle till it says PRIon either way. As far as the conventional VHF frequencies, find a bank that's empty and start there. To get into program for and frequency, press PGM then enter the 3 digit channel you are starting in (Bank 0-000, 1-100, 2-200, etc) then hit PGM again. Now you are in program mode. Simply enter the frequency you want and press enter. Press PGM to go to the next space in the bank and repeat (Freq, ENTER, PGM). Once you are done, press SCAN and then make sure the bank you programmed is on (shows the number on the top row). Programming trunkning is about as easy with a few other steps mixed in. Hope this at least gets you started. I found with this manual, read it, then once you think you understand it, read it again. Then go back and only read the margin notes... :)

Mark is correct on Pri, this word doc may help if your system is trunking. You may also put conventional freqs in a trunked bank.

Thanks!

I read and re-read the book. I guess it's not as bad as I thought, except with the few extra steps like you said. :D It there any way I can delete the programmed banks accidentally while I'm playing around with the buttons? :?

In theory, yes. It is simple as hitting FUNC+CLR while in programming mode. I know there is a way to delete an entire bank at once but as I sit here I can't think of it. It will prompt you with an "are you sure" sort of screen if you get close to wiping it out.

Shall I get into V-Folders? They are a lot easier to deal with that it seems from reading the manual. If you are woried, save the current "personality" to a v-folder. This is easy.... PGM+FUNC+PGM you are in v-folder mode now. To save the current "personality" choose 1 (save) and the pick a number between 0-9. (There are several pre-programmed folders, and sorry I don't remember what they all are, but you can overwrite one or find a blank one, like the "." key [shows #]. Either way, this is where you would save what you are working on. ) Once you have chosen the number to store it in, hit ENTER and ENTER again to confirm.... now CLR your way out of the V-Folders and mess around to your hearts content. If you screw something up so bad, you can now re-load the v-folder you just saved and be right back to where you started..... Clear as mud yet ???

Hi:

This group seems to be on the topic I want to ask about.

I also just bought a Pro 96 for listening to a Motorola 3600 baud system -the Marin County Calif system. The problem I am having is that I can hear the two or three agencies that are up on the system right now, but only when I go thru the channels manually. When the scanner is in the scan mode, I get nothing from those channels. (Regular UHF works excellant.)

I have used the rest of this site to get the correct frequencies.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Your system is Multi Table with the two required setups below.
Base: 482.0000
Spacing: 380
Offset: 12.5

Base: 488.0000
Spacing: 570
Offset: 12.5

To Set,
Press PGM, TRUNK, FUNC+3. Use the up key until Multi Table is on line 4, Press ENTER.

Now Press PGM, TRUNK, FUNC+2 and key in 482.0000, Press ENTER, key in 380, Press ENTER, use the up or down button until 12.5 appears on line 4, Press ENTER.

I don't think you will be able to set the second group without Win96, though with the first set you should be able to pick up a lot of the traffic.

Thanks Frank. I will get the cable to hook to the computer and download Win96. I have been researching the issue of Win96 and wanted to get more info. You helped confirm what I was thinking.

Still a little confused!!

:?
I managed to get alot of my favortie VHF stations programmed in. I have Bank 0, 1, 2 and 3 that are out of state, so I thought I'd just use them, and started putting numbers in....well, I went over 50 in the first bank, thought they would just go on and on
So, I think I have to get into the V folders...have to read the book AGAIN..
also, I would like to save the whole Marine Band that is in 'Search'...how and where do I put it???
I've had to lay off of it for a few days, it gets frustrating....not like programming the 'old' scanners!!!

I would suggest that you get a programming cable and download the Win96 program. It is certainly worth the extra dollars to save your sanity. As for saving a search bank (like Marine) in a regular bank; there is no "one step" way of doing it. So if you want to scan the Marine band and other banks at the same time you are going to have program the Marine band in a bank, just like any other VHF conventional frequency set.

Win96 is software that allows to you program every aspect of your scanner via your computer. Instead of manually programming freq's, alpha tags, etc.. you can do it in a software program, then upload the info to your scanner.

It also provides a valuable backup of you data in case of accidental memory loss. You can easily re-upload you scanner in seconds rather then re-program everything by hand.

Also, you can share other .p96 files with others and vice versa. The programming cable also allows you to download DSP updates from the RadioShack web site.

Is also allows you to "unlock" special frequency bands that you could not receive without Win96 to unlock them. Take it from me, you will not find anyone who will say that Win96 wasn't worth the 30 bux they paid for it.

Absolutely, I use it all the time. Also use the Win92 and Win95 programs (for those radios of course). One of the best things I like about Don's software is that he is on these forums a lot so if you have a question which cannot be answered by the help file, or another user, he will jump in with help. Can't ask for much more. :)
