Herb Kelleher was 87 (3-12-1931 - 1-3-2019) survived by wife Joan of 64 years. He lived life to the very fullest ;)
Southwest Airlines began flights in 1971 with a fleet of just 3 Boeing 737's. Now 750+ jets and 63K+ employees!
Fortune magazine, which consistently recognizes Southwest among the world's top 10 most admired companies, called Herb perhaps the Best CEO in America. They say he flunked retirement staying active on multiple boards. Herb served as SWA Executive Chairman from 1978 to 2008 and as President and CEO from 1981 through 2001.

This link to the SWA website had a section about Herb Kelleher the Maverick, Friend and Co-Founder of SWA.

Here is a link to his Obituary, also in Sunday's San Antonio Express Newspaper his obit was 4 columns wide !

After reading the SWA early milestones, I just felt I had to share a few of their many impressive marks below !
1966 to 1971
November 27, 1967 - With $500K in the bank, Herb files the application with TAC to serve DAL, IAH, and SAT.
August 06, 1968 - Austin State District Court rules against Air Southwest. (started by competitor airlines, etc.)
March 12, 1969 - Herb files appeal with the Texas Supreme Court, represents SWA free, pays all costs himself.
May 13, 1970 - Texas Supreme Court unanimously votes to overturn the lower courts & rules in favor of SWA.
March 29, 1971 - Boeing offers to sell Southwest three 737-200s with Boeing carrying 90% of the financing !
June 18, 1971- SWA begins service to DAL, SAT, and IAH. With roundtrips DAL-IAH with $20 one-way fares !
November 21, 1971 - Introduces $10 "night fare" between HOU-DAL - ( Wow "Love Airlines" that's cheap! )

btw ~ I only know 4 SWA employee's, all very happy campers, all loyal and plan to retire with SWA 401K's !!!
