Hex or dec? That is the qustion

First can I program hex for my bc296?

Second dose it matter?

Third? Would it be better then the other?

Kinda a stupid question but maybe it's not. I see that in the database there is hex and dec why?

Not a stupid question at all. You program the DEC Talk Groups into your Uniden scanner. It does matter as I don't think (not totally sure, never tried it) your Uniden scanner will accept HEX TGs. No, one is not better than the other. They both work the same. Also, I believe if you only have one set, either DEC or HEX, there is a way to convert it into the other. But for you, if you have them, use the DEC TGs. As for why there are two different ones, I believe some scanners only accept the HEX TGs.

Motorola trunking radios are programmed using HEX codes, while scanners are usually programmed with DEC codes. I never knew scanners could be programmed with HEX codes, I'm gonna have to try that and see what happens.

What I said about programming HEX codes into scanners may not be accurate. I just assumed they were listed along with the DEC codes because of the requirements of certain scanners. This may not be true, and if I am incorrect please accept my apologies.

You might just be right. I know that in Win96 there is a column for HEX codes. I always ingored it, but I'm gonna give it a spin and see how it goes.

Thanks, I figured it might not matter but wondered if the control channel would act more efficiently considering that the moto's where/are programed in a hex format and maybe the sites are using the same.

You cannot program Hex ID's into any trunktracking scanner on the market today.....Hex IDs are for programming 2 way trunked radios only....the reason for the Hex to decimal conversion is that when Uniden came out with the 1st trunktracking scanner (235xlt) they realized that It was not possible to make a 7 segment LCD character gracefully handle the alphanumerics that would be required for a HEX display. There were also issues regarding the difficulty of easy alpha (alphabetical) keypad entry of hex codes. So they developed the hex to decimal format for trunktracking scanners and it has stuck till this day....
