I live in s/w Madison and have an SDS100 w/DMR. I'm listening to DaneCom, Madison PD/FD/EMS & UW Med Flight. What do you like to monitor?

Is anyone in Dane Co. having luck with something like a Whistler WS1065 or Whistler WS1040 which are Phase I scanners? I'm trying to get into this hobby without spending $600+.

Danecom is p25 phase II , The WS1065 is phase p25 phase I. WS1065 will not cover Danecom.

Thanks much. I got confused because the database here list most of the channels on Danecom as Mode: D which I assumed was Phase I.

Anyway, I'll look into the BCD996P2. I won't be able to put an antenna outside or anything though.

Surprisingly, Danecom shows Phase II, but only a handful of TGID's are T. The rest are D, which means a 1065 CAN monitor the system. Just because it say Phase II, that isn't always the case.

See my post in answer to laidback's suggestion.

Can you hear Cottage Grove’s PD and FD? I couldn’t hear them on my 436HP and I’m awaiting arrival of my SDS100. Do you recommend the DMR upgrade for the Madison area?

Yes you will hear them. Cottage Grove PD uses the Dane CO Sheriff channels and are 8200 units. Fire is also on DaneCom. I think PD, fire and DPW use the "local" channels from time to time for stuff they don't want going through the 911 center.

What do you mean they use the Dane Co sheriff channels? What do I have to program into sentinel to hear them? These are the talk group ID's I have programmed, but my scanner is silent at the moment. (I have to believe there is SOME chatter going on.) Are there different things I should have on this favorites list?

thank you for your help, and for the information. How would one enter this as to differentiate which department is coming across when transmitting? I have a few of those saved in my “Dane County Sheriff” favorites list - as I assumed those frequencies weren’t shared and used by only the Dane County Sheriff.

You would have to identify what radio IDs correspond to what jurisdiction. Then you can assign text labels to those IDs so when you are listening they also pop up on the display so you can see which jurisdiction's unit is transmitting. Maybe someone has mapped out the Dane County system already, if you're lucky.

Thank you. I threw all of those talk groups into a “Dane County Police / Fire / Common” favorites list - and just monitor that. It seems to be picking up just about everything in the county. Just seems odd that I can’t listen to the Cottage Grove talk groups independently, or when I do, my scanner goes silent.

If you hear 8201, 8210, etc then it's Cottage Grove PD. 4000 units are the sheriff's department.

I think this numbering is still up to date. A few of these use their own dispatch (City of Madison, Capitol, UW, Sun Prairie, Middleton) but they will still use those prefixes if they switch over to the county channels.

This list has been extremely helpful. I reference it when listening to DaneCom, and it helps immensely. The first two numbers seem to indicate the jurisdiction, followed by what I assume to be car or unit number.
