Let me read between the lines and guess that your talking about a driver license or auto registration check. If it comes back active, it is a valid license or registration. If it comes back invalid or inactive, it has lapsed and is no longer legal to be operating with it.

If your talking about something else, it would be nice if you gave more details so you can get the answer your expecting.

I think he means, every once in a while they will say, "Dispatch active" or "Dispatch inactive". They do the same thing for public safety here. The'll say "Headquaters two-eight" 28 means out of service. PD doesn't do that though, I've only heard that crap on Public Safety!

In my neck of the woods it means active DOC, department of corrections ie probation, vs not on supervision, inactive. But, it depends on your area.

This would be an example of why plain language is superior to 10 or signal codes?
Even plain English is context-driven, with the meaning dependant on local usage.

As for what it means in your area, can you supply the context in which it is used? Is it police or fire? As they say, the devil is in the details!

OUCH!!! inactive 5-6 months... OUCH!!!

Hey, If you ask a question as general as, say, "what does dispatch mean when they say active or inactive?", and 3 or 4 people point out that your question has more answers than Jeeves, and ask for the context of how it was used, it would be nice for you to do what the nice people asked and answer them.

When I say active, it can mean:

Fight in progress
Hold up in progress
domestic in progress
general trouble in progress
seizure in progress
burgular alarm going off
drivers lic in force
confirmed wanted
ncic confirms a stolen car

there are many others, throw us a fricken bone here.

In my Dept. it refers to a warrant and if it is active the person is wanted.

Jim I think you have it there that sounds reasonable , yes that's usually when the dispatch says it after a license and reg check....

Active - Inactive

In SE Ohio, we check the local warrant file on people officers encounter. Generally, the reply of "Active" means that there IS a warrant on the individual. However, we also say that the person has an "Active Suspension" if they've done something that caused their operators license to be revoked....IF they got their license BACK, then the printout shows that they've HAD a suspension, but it is now INACTIVE....So, just depends on the context of WHAT you're checking....Steve
