Anyone here know a couple of frequencies fo HF ACARS? I'm going to see if AirNav can decode it. Thanks!

ACARS - Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (if memory serves me - that's pretty close)....

I've fooled around a little with HF ACARS (also known- somewhat inaccurately because there are many signals that fit the category- as HFDL or HF Datalink). On HF I've generally just seen aircraft checking in with ground stations and actually passing only a little traffic; though to be honest, I don't quite understand exactly what it is they're actually sending. It's very different from VHF ACARS - necessarily, as the protocol is quite different. I use Charles Brain's free PCHFDL decoder.

It's not one of my high interests; sometimes I try for some of the new sites that pop up from time to time, such as the Canary Island site that opened up a few months back. More will be opening up, to be sure. You could use it as a little DX indicator....

[edit] It seems there's a Yahoo group for almost anything, and here's one for hfdl....

In general, any type of traffic. But, more specifically, since ACARS’s original purpose was to reduce crew workload, messages usually range from weather related information at the destination airport - from ground crews to aircraft - to messages such as, "FTX01.MIAKOBA PLS BE ADVISED WE HAVE 01 PRECIOUS CARGO. NEW ETA 2350Z. BRGDS AND THANKS FOR NEW GCM FLT CONX.BA293" This was sent from a British Airways flight number 293.

lol

My point is that ACARS is a more efficient way to communicate between ground and air crews, but it doesn't replace ATC voice communication were timely response is needed. As far as that last message, well, it's just a sample, however cryptic, of what ACARS messages can look like.
