Came across this freq on a hurricane-related thread over on the HF board....

03920.0 LSB Maryland Emergency

It is listed as an amateur radio emergency hurricane freq for MD. Anyone know if this or other HF emergency freqs have seen significant use around our state during major weather events?

{edit} While on this topic...and since hurricane season is upon us & the CA quake/tsunami warning hit the news tonight, I figured I'd also carry over a great link that Mike Agner posted on the HF board. Some pretty up-to-date emergency HF freqs:

You can often hear other modes on these SHARES frequencies as well. One very popular mode is Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) which is a multitone signalling system. It's often used to check the viability of a path between 2 stations, amongst other uses. There's free software you can use to decode it here:

PC ALE

And Mike Chace-Ortiz has a great log of other stations - military, diplo, some commercial, too - that use ALE here;

Utility Monitoring Central

That site also has numerous digital software links, courtesy of yours truly.

That's a shame Nathan. However, at least some SHARES/NECN/FEMA frequencies have been available for many years on lists found on the WUN and other places.

While I'm sure the lists I know about aren't as good as his, check in the HF forum under the topic 'Coast Guard Broadcast Hurricane Info'. In particular Hugh Stegman's list has been frequently quoted and it's constantly being updated. In fact, I'm in the midst of updating my .320 files using these lists.
(That's the file extension used by apps that work with the TenTec RX320, for those that didn't know...)

You can hear the hurricane net on 14.325 USB

Rarely Maryland related, but you can hear the hurricane net on 14.325 USB. I normally only hear net control, but then again, my antenna leaves a lot to be desired. I occasionally hear the reporting stations. If conditions 20 meters isn’t working for some reason, check on 3.950 LSB, although, I’ve never heard it there.

Fortunately, Google does caching:

Fema Frequencies
5.211 USB FEMA Night Calling Frequency
10.493 USB FEMA Day Calling Frequency
6.809 USB FEMA
5.821 USB FEMA Channel used for Testing & other Non-Important Intrests
5.378 USB FEMA

Shares Frequencies
14.3965 USB Shares Primary Calling Frequency
5.236 USB Shares Seconday Calling Frequency

(Info might be old, but the point is, I'm scared to death that the people that came down on Dispatcher308 aren't even aware that once something is posted publicly, it stays public, somewhere, somehow. I'll sleep so much better now...)

Sounds like the FEMA people are in need of an ENEMA.

Check out the Jan 2005 issue of the WUN newsletter. That was the last one that had a column called 'military lists' written by Larry Van Horn which had a pretty fair list of FEMA frequencies, along with tons of other things. Look for it spelled out, not as the abbreviation.

The newsletter is available to the public on their website. You don't need to be a member to access it from there.

FEMA Follies

Kind of motivates me to post all the frequencies I have accumulated for them over the years. I hate to see someone bullied like that.

I agree, it's a shame that the feds have to be so paranoid about something as silly as HF freqs. If you got the info and won't loose your job over posting it, then please do the hobby a favor and post it.

I'd like to see that list, too, but with a caveat - there has been several changes in the HF federal allocations over the last couple of years, along with the adoption and implementation of ALE. So posting freqs accum'ed over the last couple of years may well have errors.

I would strongly suggest bouncing whatever list you decide to post against the WUN newsletter I mentioned in an earlier message, then flag those that don't match up. That way, folks know which freqs may or may not be any good.

As to a backup for posting the data - go for it - you have my vote.

[Edit] The Jan 05 WUN newsletter's Military Lists Area has a perfect example of old vs.new FEMA frequencies; you can view this for yourself - it's open to the public- at:

WUN Jan 05 Miilitary Lists Area

Larry Van Horn (yes, of MT) has broken down the various FEMA old vs. new frequencies, designators and unid freqs thought to belong to FEMA. You need to scroll down about 4/5 of the way down the column, or search for 'U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency'. If you quote the list, just be sure to give him full credit...Oh by the way, SHARES is also laid out in that same column. Yes, it's about 8 months old, but WAY more accurate than most lists you'll find on the net.
