Hello,

I am familiar pretty much with the MA scanner frequencies for the various PD's Fire, Aero, etc.

But, I would like to ask:

Are there any fairly active HF (<30 MHz) frequencies for-

MA State Police

Local PD's or Fire (I live in Sudbury)

Others (like for Aero., Railroads, Utility, etc.) that you folks monitor and find interesting

Is there a wiki for MA HF perhaps ?

Thanks,
Bob

Hello Bob,
I know what you're asking but I think it's time to break down and get a scanner. I just got a used Radio Shack Pro-37 on ebay for $35.00 and it picks up from ~30-~960 MHz.

There's plenty of good listening on your SW but other than CB and HAM chatter on 26-29 Mhz, no police, fire, or aircraft broadcast that low, nothing below 33 MHz. There are some utilities in the 40's, some Fire depts in the 40's, but below 30 is gonna be a tall order.

Check this out, it may be something you'd want to get. Very popular older model, easy to use, and well priced:
Radio Shack Pro 51 Scanner - eBay (item 180626670339 end time Feb-18-11 12:46:32 PST)

By the way, if you still own that WinRadio Excalibur, make sure that it isnt capable of going back 30 Mhz. It should have a range of 9 kHz to 49.995 MHz. If it does, you're in luck, still some stuff from 33-47, including Fire, DPW, Environmental Police, and some of those 42.xx state PD once in a while.

Happy monitoring,
Squelchtone

HF would not generally be used for Day-to-Day Operations by ANY of the traditional Public Safety Agencies.

Your best bet is to search for FEMA, SHARES etc on the internet for your interest.

PS, try the FCC for info

I have had the MA state police lowband (car-to-car) frequencies programmed into my scanners for yearfs, but can't remember the last time I heard anything on them. I don't know if they even have the lowband radios installed anymore. I remember seeing the long ball mount whip antennas on the Chevy Caprice Classics and some of the Crown Vics, but I don't think I've seen them on the new Dodge Chargers. Maybe they still have them, but they certainly don't use them often ( at least not in the Boston Metro area ).

There's no police and fire, at least in MA. There's plenty of HAM activity, international broadcasters, and utilities. From MA, you may hear transatlantic air traffic and VOLMET. Pirates and numbers stations pop up from time to time. Park the radio on 6925 USB weekend evenings for pirates.
