Emailed Icom asking if they could build a dedicated HF handheld built in the R15 case with a waterfall display. Think it would sell good provided it has good filters and the waterfall display like the 52a has. I for one would buy such a handheld. Would you?

Pointless. HF needs large antennas so stop it being portable. There are some new small Chinese and Russian radios that do HF badly. No real market for it. For novelty value only

And if you are talking about receive only, it's the Belka almost hands down. It doesn't have a waterfall, but with its IQ output it's conceivable to hook it up to a PC and get the waterfall that way. It hits almost every other mark for HF performance, from all the reviews I've seen.

My experience is not quite that. I do agree the Chinese and Russian stuff is junk largely do to the noise they generate themself (mostly from the receiver display). However, small active antennas based on the PA0RDT design (this model is based on that PA0RDT SDR Mini Whip VLF LF HF VHF Active Antenna miniwhip shortwave Antenna | eBay ) work amazingly well but have to be in the clear away from power lines etc. It was and really is intended just for HF depite ads. So the problem with HT HF with a small antenna is that you cannot get it away from interference sources including the HT itself and power wiring. Not really much you can do about that. (if you have never properly mounted a PA0RDT based antenna, you will be surprised. It hase been around for decades for a reason).
