I am thinking about getting a HF/Shortwave type setup, but i see that the USAF doesn't really fly much in our area, and so besides Ham bands and shortwave news/music broadcasts wondering what all else i might be able to pickup in our area and if anyone else is already listening to much HF.. ??

I bought a YB 400 just for this sort of thing. You can monitor some of the NAT and CAR MWARA(Major World Route Area) transmissions, depending on the weather, time of year, time of day, antennae,... hope you have some spare time, money, patience...

There are at least two [2] Yeasu 8800's on e-bay ham radio
receiver section. I bought one in '84. Just a little over $400
then. Mine is used every day. I monitor USCG, Aero routes,
some select ham freqs, and in winter monitor 11,300
N. Africa Air Traffic Control from about sundown on east
coast till 12:m

I use a 66' windom and can tell you how to build one for
under $10 except for the mast.

We are at the bottom of sun spot cycle. May be 5 years before
really good signals and long distance return. There is still plenty
to listen to.
