i was thinking of buying the Pro 95 1000-Channel Dual-Trunking Handheld Scanner from ebay. it seems like a good scanner. its going to get shipped from the USA. i live in the UK, would the scanner work in the uk, would it pick up things like police, taxies etc??

If you have a Motorola non-digital or EDACS non-digital or Conventional non-digital, then the Pro-95 will serve you will, but so will a number of Unidens.

If you have digital of any kind that you want to hear, then you will need the Pro-96 or Unicen BC's 250D, 785D, 296D or 796D. The 250D and 785D will only receive 3600 baud digital.

To be a bit more accutrate; "if you want to hear P25" you need one of the "digital models. They will NOT receive any other form of digital, nor encrypted P25.

Any digital will do both, BUT know what your system is doing based on the type digital (3600 or 9600) Or maybe even one of the new non-monitorable digital systems, Pro Voice for example.

there is a diferent band plan in england. I would not buy a scanner until someone could say they had used it on the sytems you are talking about. I suggest you check on javiation.com as he is a dealer in england.

There are NO scanners available that will allow you to listen to the UK plod on Airwave.

There is very little in the way of Motorola / EDACS or LTR trunking in the UK

The scanner will work just fine.
The issue is if it will receive what you want to hear!

If you know what you anat to listen to, then maybe some one can answer your question.

Well it will pick up things! (as long as the things are analog or P25 digital)

It will not pick up TETRA (The digital that most police are probably using)

There are numerous models of scanner available in the Uk/Europe and a whole host more if you want to import one from the USA. "Things" is hardly a descriptive term for what you want to listen to!

Do you want something that is handheld, mobile or a huge desktop unit?

If "things" means just about everything then you need to get something that covers a wide frequency range, is multi-mode (AM, NFM, WFM, SSB etc), programmed to accept all common channel step sizes (or better still allows you to specify the step).

Will you want to monitor the input and output freqs on dual freq systems? If so you will need a radio with twin VFOs (and there are very few that do have true twin VFOs) or one that can quickly change between the two freqs.

Where abouts in the UK are you? Are you near any of the users of Smartnet and likely to want to monitor them? If so you might need a "trunk-tracker" (or a computer to run trunking software).

I'd suggest you talk to Javiation (or Nevada, etc etc) on the phone...explain to them what you want to listen to, what you want to spend and they'll guide you towards likley suitable radios.

Try looking at reviews of radios in magazines (SWM, Radio Active)

Will you want to listen to airband? The radio doesn't cover civil or mil airband. How about shortwave? That isn't covered either. Handhelds are rarely a good choice for shortwave but many will do a good job with fairly strong signals. Buses and trains (well some people probably want to listen to them!) are also not covered.

If none of the above matter it might be a good choice (I've never seen one or used one) if as they say it is good for beginners.

Up the ante to about £100 and you should be close to affording something with better coverage if you look at secondhand gear. Maybe you don't want to buy secondhand but it is always an option and can offer better value for money.

thank you all, i think i have made my decision i think im going to buy radio shacks pro95. since the tetra scanners arent avaliabe for the public.
