Not a bad idea... I have access to a few different vehicles which might be suitable.

sounds like me when i was a kid (not saying your childish) me and my best friend would pick a "target" could be a business , a person or what ever and watch it study it learn all we could about it like being a detective it was a lot of fun.

Please allow me to elaborate. I have no problem searching out frequencies. I have done it in my local area to try to monitor new things. BUT, I don't think I would try to "hide in the bushes" and set up some kind of "covert" receiver to pick up coms.

I don't know which came first the movie, TV or reality, but I know of a few "vans" equipped with some pretty sophisticated monitoring equipment that actually do exist. I got to peek in one years ago when repairing a radio at an agency I won't name. Lots of antenna's located inside PVC pipe mounted on a ladder rack on the roof, a roof top vent that actually was a 360 camera, but when another of our techs got too close he got shooed away. Since I was a radio tech I also got at this facility a complete listing of a joint task forces frequencies by removing the paper stickers located inside both the VHF and UHF radios, with the agencies approval of course. Granted this was pre 911.
Just saying there are many ways of obtaining info, just make sure you are on steady legal grounds, but don't be put off by the paranoia of others.

Quote"And they wonder why so many systems are encrypting..

You can be sure t's not from actual radio monitoring, and a lot of times newer equipment comes with "E" right out of the box. It might have been the sales mans point for the sale.

Quote"There was a time when Japan had a cellular mobile telephone system that was prorietary and run by the Govt of Japan.

Saudi Arabia is another one, years back I worked on some radios headed there, since the Govt did not allow more than one per customer. A young engineer of ours found a way to duplicate RID's and we sold a LOT of mobile phones to rich Saudi's who wanted one in each of their multiple cars.

It's not paranoia to say that the OP's tactics are a bad idea.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: its one thing to be curious about what freqs are in use, and who is using them. It's totally another to resort to hiding equipment to satisfy ones curiosity.

As an avid aircraft spotter/photographer, there are certain areas around certain airfields that I don't visit simply to avoid hassle by either the airport authorities and/or local law enforcement even though my activities aren't illegal.

In my case it is a bit more than just being curious, it is what I do, my main focus of this hobby is hunting down frequencies like this.

Look, I understand it's your hobby. It's fine. It's the tactics in this particular situation that leave me saying that perhaps it's time to let this fish off the hook.

op has a dont give up attitude no [sense] in giving up

If one's activities would be deemed "suspicious" and/or otherwise unwanted out in the open, then sneaking around and doing said activities surreptitiously doesn't make it better.
