Can someone explain why all the excitement over P25? Sounds bad, audio levels are uneven to say the least, radios are difficult to program and expensive as hell.
What is so terrible about the existing 800mhz system? Plenty of radios, both scanner and commercial. Not too difficult to program and the cost isn't outrageous.
Just wasting taxpayer money in my very humble opinion.
I say "If it ain't broke, why fix it?"
Tell me where I'm wrong.
Maybe it sounds like crap on a scanner but I can assure you it sounds great on a commercial radio.

No it is not a scanner it is a pager that has some scanning functions.

Well, I bit the bullet and purchased one. I watched a video on youtube about how to program it with the Unication software…doesn’t look that hard. On a related note, I know Fire isn’t on P25 yet, but I am assuming at some point they will be?

Yes FD is expected to move to the new system. Which model did you purchase? I would recommend the drop in charger as well.

I also picked up a G4 from Ray's Pagers. Got the amplified charger with mine, should be here in the next few days. Ray is a good guy I would also recommend buying from him.
I've looked at the programming software and it doesn't look too bad, certainly MUCH, MUCH, easier than that joke (sentinel) that comes with the SDS100 or the aftermarket software, Butel which was a little better. But again, after spending $700 for the radio, I shouldn't have to fork out another $40 for after market software!

I picked up the drop in charger and an extra battery. I figured it can’t hurt to have another battery.

Got my G4 today. Super simple to program, great audio and easy to use.
I'm so glad I made the switch. Uniden SUCKS!
I get my G4 on Monday. I also ordered the drop in charger and extra battery. I cannot wait to get this pager/scanner!

A question for people that have this….whenever fire comes on to P25, can I set it up to only do an alert page only for the structure fire tone? No big deal if I can’t but I was just wondering.

While I was listening yesterday I heard people on the HCSO channels complaining about the audio quality and I think I heard someone mention not to talk so loud into the mics. Kinda funny that some deputies feel the same way y'all do ;D

TPD transmissions on EDACS sound like they are being multicast from the P25 system. Sounded like digital voice being relayed to analog.
