Recently moved to HHI area. Cant seem to get my Home Patrol 2 to pick up The local Fire and Beaufort County Sherriff and related frequencies. Had no trouble programing previous city up north for Local/State/County Law Enforcement and local fire trunked systems.
Tried programing based on usual pages and forum posts on this website with no luck. Could someone provide me with some specific frequencies and advice on how to get the HP unit tuned in? Thanks in advance.

Beaufort County sheriff and PD are pretty much all encrypted. What scanner are you using? Hilton Head Island uses the Palmetto 800 P25 Phase 1 trunked system. Here is what you need for Hilton Head Fire/Rescue:

That Home Patrol 2 likely isn't going to work well with that system being simulcast.

Welcome to SC and to the Hilton Head Island area. I don't live there but I visit the area several times a year and monitor public safety during my visits.

Beaufort County agencies use Palmetto 800 site 63 (Beaufort Simulcast) exclusively. Someone else was helpful in posting the specific frequencies from the database in post #2 above. You won't hear these agencies on any other sites, so you have to ensure that you have created a system with only this site enabled. If you monitor the Bluffton or Port Royal sites instead, you won't hear Beaufort County agencies.

While Site 63 is a simulcast site, I have found that I receive transmissions pretty well on HHI with scanners not optimized for simulcast reception. There is only a single site located on HHI which seems to minimize problems with simulcast distortion. Your location and antenna will play a big factor in your success using a Home Patrol II.

As noted, all Beaufort County Law Enforcement agencies are encrypted, so you won't hear BCSO, Beaufort PD, or Bluffton PD traffic at all. BC EMS Dispatch is often encrypted, and some FD tac channels are encrypted. However, HHIFR dispatch and tac channels are in the clear, as is BC Fire dispatch (which dispatches all county fire departments except for HHIFR). Bluffton FD, which covers most of the area of Beaufort County "South of Broad" other than Hilton Head Island itself, is also in the clear.

SCHP Dispatch is often carried on Site 63 also. But it's the only state agency you'll hear on Site 63. It hear other state agencies or statewide talkgroups (EMD, DHEC, DOT, DNR, medical helicopters, etc) you'll want to monitor one of the other sites such as Bluffton, Jasper or Port Royal. You'll hear different agencies on different sites, so monitor each one for a while to get a sense of which agencies are carried on each site. Tailor your radio programming to suit your interests.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks to you all for your thoughtful responses.
2 more questions, what if I chucked the home patrol 2, would there be a better scanner for my situation?
And, encrypted is encrypted, no way to beat that so I can hear BCSO which is what I'm mainly interested in?

If we ever get unpacked ill start working on it. Moving sucks, though moving away from the snow and on to a warner Island is awesome!

Encryption is meant to prevent unauthorized listeners from listening to radio traffic. There is no way to defeat it. BCSO is unmonitorable.

Uniden makes 2 radio models specifically designed to perform well on simulcast systems such as the one in use in Beaufort County. They are the SDS-100 (handheld) and SDS-200 (desktop). Prepare your wallet. Currently, these are the only two traditional "scanner" receivers that excel in simulcast environments.

As I said previously, I have had success monitoring Site 63 on Hilton Head with other scanners. It's not perfect, but acceptable. The tower site is on Arrow Road near Sea Pines Circle. I would expect reception toward the north end of the Island to be less reliable than toward the sound end. Ensure that you have your HP2 properly programmed only for site 63 and give it a try from your location for a few days before you decide you need to replace it.

Here is a favorites list for you to try. Save the attached zipped file to your computer and extract. Using HomePatrol Sentinel, go to the File tab and Import from hpe file. Click on New Favorites List and name it Hilton Head Is Click on OK. In the Downloads folder, highlight the extracted file (Hilton Head Is.hpe) and click on Open. It will appear as a favorites list in Sentinel. If you have a problem with Nothing to Scan, check that both Download and Monitor are On for the favorites list and Custom 1 service type is enabled.

Thanks so much! I'll give it a try when I get a moment!
