As a former Southern California resident, I remember in the early 1960's when the LAPD transmitted just about the AM broadcast band on 1730 kHz. If you are a Southern California resident or are familiar with the area, you know what a SIGALERT is. The gentleman who started that system in 1955 just passed away. Here is an interesting, historical website about the LA area police and fire radio and the man who developed the SIGALERT. Interesting reading and nice links! Even mentions their new digital stuff!

I have heard that many years ago the LAPD when they were on 1730 KHz., they would receive requests for QSL card and apparently they would confirm each report received. Apparently, they received reports from all over the place, which they sincerely appreciated, because it let them know how well their signal was propagating at night. I wish other departments would still do this.

Those were the good old days when all you had to do is adjust the tuning cans a little and bingo, you had LAPD.
I remember when the rode around on Harley three wheelers with trunks.

They did not do it for the hobbiest listener.
That was there old One-Way dispatch system (befor two-way radio).

It is about the same as agencies today that patch their dispatch talkgroup to an old VHF channel for the vollies.

A 3 wheeler trunked Harley! In the early 1960's the Albertville Police Department in Alabama used those.

LAPD On MF

While stopping in Antiqua on my Nuclear sub, I was scanning around on the HF Receiver right about the AM Broadcast band and I found there are still agencies using those frequencies like the lapd did. I cann't remember the Carabean Island that was using it as a police dispatch but just wanted to pass this on. From the former uncle sams submersable canoe club member now Los Angeles County Fire Dispatcher.

Wow, I can remember those Harley three wheelers with trunks. The local police dept., had two of them in the early 1970s, they were mostly used for parking and traffic enforcement. Ah those were the days! :wink:
