• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have the 158L mic (the slim profile version of the 159L), and have the same problem using it with an F43 radio. There's just no "punch" to the transmitted audio---it's very soft and distant sounding, compared to the HT1250's my department has which sound full and clear. Changing the gain settings via the radio software doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference either. Maybe it's just an Icom thing....I've been looking at the possibility at replacing it with an Otto mic and seeing if that makes a difference.

I also have an 158l mic and its like a toy compared to the 159....but both have very limited volume....im using the mice on a 3001 and 3011.....the 3001 has excellent volume on its own...but when the mic is hooked up and seems like audio is cut in half and gets hard to hear at times.

Icom resently changed these microphones to "Low Gain". I can only assume end users were commenting that the previous revision was "too loud". There was a time where dealers could order both the standard and low-gain verion - but now all that remains as an option is the low-gain.

Thanks, GMRS....I was hoping that wasnt the case. Especially since its easy to turn the volume knob down if needed.

When judging the "punch" of the transmitted audio using the 159L, are you listening to yourself with another nearby radio, or are you actually talking to someone far away, and they are telling you that your audio is low?

I have the 159L and the 158L on my demo radios and the ones I have sold to other customers, and have not heard of this complaint.

When I am using the 159L on one of my radios, I speak across the mic with my mouth about 2 inches away, and have been told by the user on the other end that I was coming across with a very good signal.
