Hi, I Need some help in picking an Antenna for use at Home I have a chimney mast on the roof now with a GMRS Radio Antenna on it I plan on removing that Antenna I have been looking at few antennas the ones I was looking at are Maldol HVU-8 but it has a narrow bandwidth then I was also looking at the CHA-250B and the Diamond BB7V but that one needs a Tuner, the last 3 antennas I was looking at are the Diamond CP-6AR or CP5H and the Comet CHV-5X I would like to use 2 Meters also I was thinking of adding a another chimney mast with a Edison Fong DBJ-1 J-Pole or if I go the HVU-8 I would not need to add the second chimney mast it has the VHF UHF but I will need to use a Duplexer this will be my First HF antenna any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

QST magazine has a lot of antenna ads and information. A guy in my club suggested when I do a HF station setup looking at a super antenna. I think it does most of the HF bands and 2meter and 70cm as well. Sorry 80 meters down to 70cm....LOL I think they have one where you can set it on a picnic table or outside for Field Day!! To tell you the truth I might just get one before I get my HF radio and use it outside on my HT and see who or what I can receive!!! Spock!!!

The first two are junk antennas. Don't waste your money.

I have used the 102ft. WA2NAN model for years and it has been a great antenna no complaints here. I have it in the inverted V at 30 feet.

My suggestion is to first off, go horizontal. Less noise. If you can almost fit a full size G5RV in, go ahead and try it. You can bend the last 20% of the ends down and not really affect. If room is more limited, think about a G5RV Jr. or loaded dipole, or whatever. I personally think it's better to keep as much of the antenna horizontal as possible and bend the ends down at a 90 degree angle, then making a inverted V. I'm sure many will disagree. If you really got your heart set on a vertical, mount it on the ground.

An antenna's usefulness depends on it's physical size. The lower you go in frequency the longer that usable sized antenna becomes. Any antenna can be 'shortened' a bit, but after a very little bit it's usability/performance also is shortened. It just depends on how 'much' usability you can be satisfied with, you know?
I'm afraid that all 'multi-band' antennas are compromises in some way, either 'size' or cost, mostly. And that also means that you will be limited by the available space you have for an antenna. The higher the frequency the more 'convenient' the antenna can be. That's a relative thingy that isn't always measured in feet/yards.

Yes great idea, I also use a Hy-Gain TH6-DXX beam and love it. I would recommend trying a beam at some point.
