You can build antenna's out of parts readily available at most hardware stores.
What do you want to build, what wavelength, what center frequency, what design? Do you want to disguise it as a flamingo?
You'll likely find the parts at a home depot, and with some 50 ohm coax you'll be set.
The education required to get going on antenna design might offset the convenience of just buying one.

It is fairly easy to beat the factory antenna on a single band.
What are you after?
If the answer is "everything," a commercial antenna would be the easy way to go.
