If Uniden or any mfg. did proper R & D before releasing a unit there would be no need for update other than freq. changes after market sale.

One of the most ridiculous statements I have ever seen.

Your take on technology is at least 20 years behind the times.

I guess you never want new features to be released...

And you still have to update regularly to keep your programming data up to date, so you really don't have a point anyway.

Just because you buy a product lets say in 2016 doesn't mean the advancements in Software/Firmware development stops when you buy the product. Nearly all electronics these days get Software/Firmware updates on a regular basis including scanners, ham radios, television sets, cell phones, media players, security systems, etc. to make them function better or to add more features. Even my Nissan Vehicle got a Firmware update last year when I went in for an oil change and tire rotation. Your perception of R&D makes no sense. It is an advantage to consumers that electronics are capable of Software/Firmware updates on the products they purchase.

I've never loaded Sentinel on it. Didn't need or care to as it received what I needed it to. This is why I bought this model as it was operational right out of the box and did not need any programming. Batteries check out fine on a volt meter. Original ones that came with it.Scanner is always inside, plugged in with its included AC adapter except every once in a while i'll unplug it and listen to it in bed.
I just checked the box and there is no usb cable in it. Is it unique to this scanner? I just tried a micro usb from my samsung android phone and it appears different.

You need a mini-USB cable for updating the database on the HP-1.

Appreciate all the help. My town did not upgrade there system yet so that can't be the cause. I leave it on 1 channel for my town. i'll throw a pair of regular AA batts in it and see what happens as well as remove the sd card and blow the slot out with canned air. If that don't do it, I'll have to get a usb cord cause either it did not come with it as the box says it did or I freaking lost/misplaced it.

Sometimes, the cables or other small parts are tucked into a little pocket of the cardboard shell that the scanner sits in, inside the outer box. Almost threw away a SMA->BNC adapter that came with my HP-2, which was all but out of sight until I went through everything again, looking for it. It was well concealed.

Seems like a waste of time and money so far. Changed the batteries, No change. Replaced the micro sd card, no change. Same bs,turn it on, weather its set on 1 town or scanning that county, after a short time, usually less than a minute, it reverts back to the set-up screen. Next?

With the batteries left out, the unit will stay on, however some of the functions are lost like Replay etc.

With the batteries out all writing to the SD card are disabled. When you enable it by putting the batteries back in it tries to write to the SD card but fails with an error that haven't been anticipated and the software crashes and restarts as it have no escape route programmed from that error.

Focus on the SD card and it's connectors. Try a totally different brand and perhaps size. There's no reason to go over 8GB in size. Never ever use 64GB or bigger cards as it will be more or less pure luck if they will work with any device.

I did that yesterday. First took some canned air and gave it a couple of quick shots with the original card out. re-inserted it and no change. My neighbor said the card is probably corrupt so i went and got a new SanDisc 32GB as they did not have an 8. They did have a 16 and 24 but I figured for a few extra bucks, get the 32, installed it, expecting a fix. No change. I'm assuming at this point I'm going to have to get into this Sentinel stuff.

Canned air doesn't clean anything except dust particles from camera lenses and such. You have to use something that will desolve the dirt on the contacts, like a contact cleaner spray.

A new (or newly formatted) SD card will not work in the scanner until you use the “Clear User Data” function using the Sentinel software.

Using that function puts the system files on the card that scanner needs to boot up and operate.

So I borrowed my neighbors usb cord from his home patrol, figured out how to download Sentinel I believe,to computer but can't get it on the scanner. Tried everything I could think of. New 32 sandisk, followed directions on, on-line owner's manual, went on homepatrol.com, read and followed what it said. Nothing works. Can't operate the unit on just batteries. Still keeps reverting back to the same start-up menu.
I put the original sd card back in, yanked the batteries out and will look for a few more ac adapters.
How frustrating to spend this kind of money on a scanner, to have it fully operational for 7 months and decide it wants to half work. Never again. And then they want you to spend more money for more programming etc. Not me. No more Unidens and maybe no more scanners unless unless it can be had of no more "download this software, firmware, hardware" bs. Why not just sell a new loaded micro sd card for a FAIR price and all you have to do is put it in?

Uniden's software, firmware, and database updates are free.

No more Unidens and maybe no more scanners unless unless it can be had of no more "download this software, firmware, hardware" bs.

That's impossible with any brand of scanner. Radio systems change periodically, and therefore programming must periodically change to match, regardless of scanner brand. You either update, or gradually hear less and less traffic.

Why not just sell a new loaded micro sd card for a FAIR price and all you have to do is put it in?

Because most people have the ability to update their current card with a few mouse clicks. And pre-programmed cards don't allow personal favorite lists, which most people use.

Most people. Not everyone is proficient at everything.

If you have the ability learn how to post here, you have the ability to learn how to use Sentinel to update your scanner database.

If you want to successfully monitor the communications systems in your vicinity, you have to keep up with the technology as it evolves around you. To think that a radio system that your local police uses does not change in a 5-6 year span is simply refusing to accept reality. They change things to make it harder for scanner enthusiasts to monitor their transmissions, to make it easier for them to monitor their own transmissions, and to add features to their systems that will better ensure their safety on the job and tune their radios for optimum performance. In order for us to improve the capabilities of our own monitoring systems we have to keep pace with advancements in technology or get left in the dust.

There are quite a few of us in our 60s that have learned to adapt. Welcome to the jungle.

Well put. We have to understand that their aim is necessarily selfish. They're concerned about their own communications, not the public's ability to listen to them. That's a whole different realm in the industry.
