This will not be a leghtly comment, I am an old guy (in my 60s) and have been around the block a few times, so that being said, I purchased a Home Patrol-1 from Radio Shack, for $449 on sale and also got a on line coupon for $20, making the total purchase $429, of course thats with out tax, and also purchased from the Uniden site the extreme update, for the $99.99. Here is the short and sweeeeeet comment, it's the easiest and best scanner I have ever had, it truely kicks butt,my hats off the uniden, just love this easy to use scanner, took me all of 10 seconds to program my favorites lists.Thank you for a fine product Uniden, RadioCrazy

Yes I am sure I got an HP-1 probably the newest from the factory, and it's just great, no need for me to lie, I gain nothing, but to all who of you naysayers, mine works great, and as easy as my I phone apps to program, what favorites I want I put in my local lists, and what I don't want I don't, it's not brain surgery, just real simple.

One man's trash...

Your mileage may vary. Batteries not included. Some assembly required. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Your flight attendant may be used as a floatation device.....you get the idea.

Your opinion of the Home Patrol will depend on your individual tastes, experience level and a host of other variables. It has a steep learning curve and can be hard to wrap your head around. It is a unique reciever with a number of unique tools and features not found in any other scanner - but unique isn't everyone's cup of tea.

The more I learn about and use my HP-1 the more I enjoy it and wonder how I ever got along without it - but I still enjoy listening to my other scanners as well. Each fills a different bill.

I agree ive had my HP-1 for about a year now and it works great. I havent had any issues and use it to monitor outside agencies while at work. The volume could be a little bit louder, but thats not a big deal. Its never let me down, plus the ability to record/replay whats going on is a big help in many occasions

Well I am 71 and just pulled the trigger on a "Like New HP-1" from Uniden. Enjoy as I hope to. Wanted a 996XT but need to get used to the programming thing first.

I have two now, sitting right next to each of my 996T's (two different locations).. I doubt a better pair could be found.

I said before time and time again that the Homepatrol was not my cup of tea and boy did i stick my foot in my mouth.Just picked up one from a fellow RR member in the last few weeks and all i can say is well this thing or toy some would say is awesome. My recommendation would be try one out if you get the chance if you like it And decide to buy one cool if you buy and decide it is not to your liking trade it away or sell it for what you want.Mine is sitting between my 796d and my 996t on the main desk. Now just need to add an XT digital to the family and when that happens the PRO-197 makes it way to the table next to the bed.

I've read alot of commentary on the HP-1 since its' introduction but have never heard it described as having "a steep learning curve" or "hard to wrap your head around".

Most users seem to agree that this unit is the only "brain optional" digital scanner on the market.

Yes, there are dummies in this world and beyond, so no matter how simple a task, some may find it rocket science, it's to each individual comprehension, and some have non, fact of life here on earth!!

If you have been using traditional scanners with the standard frequency->channel->bank model like the 200xlt, the Homepatrol is a big leap. If you've already been using a scanner with dynamically allocated memory and have a fairly decent grip on trunk radio concepts, it's a fairly easy transition.

The best thing to do is realize it's not like any scanner you've used before, read the manual, and enjoy the relative simplicity.
