Would the HP be a good scanner for a news desk member who is proficient in smartphones but not in scanners? Trying to find and lock in a specific agency channel can be a task for many assignment editors, but if it were as easy as pressing a button and typing in the city or agency name, that would really be a big plus. i am just not sure if these features are BUILT IN to the scanner, or if you can tag and type custom items.

We have an HP that was in a live truck that someone ripped out, so it's sitting around looking for a use.

Thanks! Paul

If the HP1 was pull from the truck and is just sitting around, GO FOR IT!

You will need the programming cable, nothing special, USB to mini USB. Sony Playstation 3 cable or many camera cables meet this required.

The Sentinal software is a Windows program free for download and installation. This allows for firmware and Master Database updates that occur weekly.

The HP1 can playback up to 3-4 minutes of traffic if you miss something, or you can set it to record traffic.

It will take you a while to get used to the scanner, but you will find it very useful and pretty easy to use since it is touch screen.

I am lookin gto replace this as our main "lock-in" scanner for the news desk, while the rest keep scanning. Looking for something that a novice non scanner user can get into, by simply typing say the city name, or fire department,a nd instantly getting the broadcast they need. Not sure if you can only select Uniden downloaded stuff, or whatever you put into it?

This would be a pretty good scanner for this purpose. As you already understand you need multiple scanners to catch all the action.

You can easily lock on the System, Department or Talkgroup. Then you can easily step through each System, Department or Talkgroup until you find the Talkgroup you want to monitor.

I would ditch the factory antenna and get the Radio Shack 800 MHz antenna and hopefully the 90 degree adapter is still with the scanner.

As for the database. You can download the entire national database and then you can monitor a subset based on your location AND you can program your own Favorites List.

The 2 things that confuse most people and cause problems is not understanding and properly using Location Control and Service Types. Once this is understood, pretty good to go.

The built in recording function is very useful for going back and reviewing events to get the story properly documented.

Have fun, do not hesitate as someone else may find a use for it!
