Well, with the price now listed at $499 at multiple vendors, I have to chime in and say that I'm a little disappointed.

Then again, the $499 range has been working for digital scanners, and the Home Patrol features digital, so I'm not too surprised.

BUT... since it is called a "Home Patrol 1", I have to assume there is a "Home Patrol 2" in development. And probably without digital, and priced hundreds of dollars less.

It wouldn't make sense from a business standpoint to release a lower-end model first, then release the higher-end model. That's bad for shareholders. You will always have people who only need the lower-end product, but go for the higher-end instead of waiting it out.

Here's hoping I can wait... :D

Below is a sampling of vendors I checked today for the HP-1. As you can see, I had limited success. I am sure there are others that sell Uniden scanners, but these are the only ones I checked. As the next couple of months unfold, I am certain more and more listings/prices will appear. But, at the moment, this is what I came across.

The Ham Station - $495.95 (already mentioned)

Grove Enterprises - $499.95 (already mentioned)

Bearcat Warehouse - listed, but no price yet

Universal Radio - listed, but still showing as pending FCC approval

Scanner Master - listed, but showing price TBD

I could not find the HP-1 listed at all on the following websites:

Uniden Direct
R and L
AES
Ham City
Lentini Communications
National Electronics
Copper Electronics
CEI
Advanced Specialties Electronics
Ham Radio Outlet
Giga Parts
CB World
Amazon
J&R Electronics

The reason it is telling you that is because of the information in the RR database. You are correct that it will not do Provoice. However, if the frequency and talkgroup data exists within the database for a system using something like Provoice or Open Sky, etc., it will show up in the HP-1. It is only a reflection of what is contained in the database, but does't mean the HP-1 can decode any additional digital protocols than what the current crop of digital scanners can. I am sure you understood that based on your comments, but I thought I would try to clarify the point for those that might get the wrong impression.

I understand that. I heard it was using the RR database. Its just that it may mislead people.

Agreed, and we clarified that above, as I found that I misspoke regarding the nature of the HP-1 database. Apparently they are working on cleaning up the database as it would appear in the HP-1 so that the stuff that is unmonitorable will not appear within the scanner, even though it might in the RR database here. It sounds to me like they will be using filters so that the replicant on the Uniden server will not pull down the data from RR pertaining to those systems the HP-1 cannot receive. At least that is how I understand it now. I believe the reason that some of that stuff shows up in the demo on the home patrol site is because they wanted to get something up and running quickly so people could test drive the concept. Since it was a rush job, they didn't have the opportunity to fine tune it. I believe they will have those types of issues worked out with regard to the database by the time the HP-1 is released.

A) It will bring in new people to the hobby.

B) I am sure you will get more responses to your posts once
you offer more substantive material than what you have offered so far about the Home Patrol:

Here is the reasons I am not buying this scanner or anymore for uniden or gre.

1. Have bought digital scanners form both companys. And iam not paying a 500 dollars for another one.

2. The digital decode need to inprove to decode opensky provice d-star p25 p25II AND EF JOHNSON MULTINET SYSTEMS.

3 THE SCANNER THAT I PAID 500 FOR ARE THE PRO96 PRO197 BC 796D BC 780XLT NO MORE UNTIL THEY INPROVE THERE RADIOS.

I think uniden has a good scanner but they need to inprove the digital cards. And i dont think they sould listen to just the people that cant figure out the new scanner. And leave the rest of us hanging when a lot of are paying upwards of 500 or more dollars on their scanners. If this scanner had the inproved decoding for pa and other opensky systems and d star. Then i would buy one right now. they need to listen to all of their customers. the way there going is a good way for them to fail as a company.

this scanner is going to suck this scanner is the same as all the rest only the tuch screen is new this scanner is going to suck and they will be on ebay the day after they come out.

As a follow-up to checking various websites for prices, I queried Universal Radio about a price and the fact that their listing still shows pending FCC approval. Rick from Universal replied that they would indeed update their site indicating approval, but that they cannot set a price yet as they haven't received any pricing from their vendors.

It has brought new people into the hobby, as well as bringing some back to the hobby, even the experienced users like it. Even at that price..... :)

I have found it not possible to program a new 996XT to deal with one county's P25 system after expending many hours of effort. I hope to hear from someone who has a 485xx ZIP code and an HP-1. Is it true that one just imports the ZIP code and one is done? If that is true, then the price of an HP-1 is great as for the same price the 996XT does not work. Total price = item cost + cost to get it to work.

Yes, unless nobody in your area submitted the lat/long/range of your system to the RRDB.

My suggestion is to post on the HP forum (or here) and ask for help. Your problems really are not related to the cost of the scanner.

Just found the HP1 at Fry's for $449.99. Even with tax here in TX it is cheaper than others! How can this be?

I geuss I still don't get it....besides a novice scanner listener who wants to turn the HP-1 and leave it alone what exactly is the appeal? Given I have been scanning for 20+ years I STILL want to control what I listen to and how I listen to it. I don't mind programming my 996T or 396T using software and computer. I want to match my PD's radio plan, maybe with some fooling around you can do it on the HP-1, but then I don't see the big difference than a 996t. Even though the technology is more advanced I would think Uniden would price it cheaper to attract scanner buffs that aren't die hards
