I heard that Homeland Security was trying to get all police agencies nationwide to use the same radio codes, sometimes called 10 codes. Anybody know about this.

The Feds are also demanding that all Police Agencies change their cars to black and white and are threatening to hold back federal funds for police agencies that don't comply.

Maybe next we'll just have 1 police force nationwide.

Half true. DHS was attempting to get everyone on the same page in terms of interoperability so they could talk to each other during a disaster. Bad idea and was almost immediately rescinded by DHS. Old news.

Car colors

What about the color of the cars all being black and white.

I understand most New Jersey police agencies have already switched over and other police agencies around the country are in the process.

DHS actually wants every public safety agency in the US to drop the use of 10-codes. This was a DHS proposal about a year ago, then it was reversed at the International Association of Chiefs of Police due to belly-aching by the PD's across the US. However, in the last 45 days or so, DHS changed it's mind again, calling for the end of 10-code use on multi-jurisdictional incidents. It's a compromise, I suppose.

There are many PD's that are dropping thier 10-codes altogether regardless of the ruling.

As for the PD's changing thier cars, that's a rumor. None of the law enforcement agencies I have connections to are making any plans to change. In fact, Virginia State Police will be going to a new graphics package in 2007, while keeping thier blue & gray paint scheme. Pictures in the Virginia forum.
