I just built a homemade yagi antenna to use with my Yaesu handheld for satellites. The web site where I copied the plans said with a little upgrade you can also transmit but it doesn't say what to do. Its a simple dowel with 5 brass elements and a coaxial cable. Can I TX with that or do I need to do something else?
Thanks

I assume this is a 2 meter yagi ?
Could you post a link to the antenna project so we can a look at
what you built. Interested in the driven element and feed.
Do you have a SWR meter that works on 2 meters ? If so, you
can test the match to see if it looks ok....

The antenna you built is for (UHF) 434 Mhz and is being used for receiving
only. Most satellites are cross band repeater systems where you transmit
on one band and listen on another. There are a few exceptions to this setup
but generally this is how they work.
There are birds that have multiple bands and the configuration can change
depending how the controller is set up so today the down link is on UHF but
the next path could be on VHF.
Things you will need: A tracking program for your computer so you know
when and where the satellite is located and what direction to point your
antenna. Almost all the birds are low earth orbit devices that orbit the
earth so its important to know where it's located.
There is a huge amount of information available on the web to assist
you with current frequencies,, tracking and other important info to make
the task easier.
Have a look at this link and you can get a better grip on the the info
you will need.
I also made a little drawing to show what you have. Good luck..
